4200 and firefly reticule
« on: November 30, 2003, 06:42:10 PM »
Would you guys rate an elite 4200 (say in 3.9X40) as a better scope for low light conditions than a varXIII?

Is the firefly reticule the best choice for low light conditions?
How long does the firefly reticule remain charged after you have "lit it up" with a torch? How do you like it as a reticle under normal light conditions, ie "not charged up"?

Thanks for your thoughts

In the Elite 4200 series, the firefly reticle is only available in the 2.5-10x40.  I personally think the Elite 4200 is better than the Leupold Vari-X III's and at a better price.  The firefly reticle typically will glow for about 30 minutes after charging it.  It is the same reticle as the 3-2-1 Low Light, but just with the illumination.

Interestingly enough, I just bought a new Elite 4200 2.5x-10x-40mm from Jon at the optic zone.

Is it better than the Vari-X III?  YES!  I should know as I own several Elite 4200s and Vari-X IIIs.  And, to top it all off, the ELite 4200 is not only less expensive, but also has rainguard.  The frosting on the cake is that Bushnell is offering a $99 rain parka for free if you buy a new Elite scope.  In fact, I just now finished filling it out and will be mailing it after I get off of this post.

As for the Firefly reticle, I have an Elite 3200 scope that has it.  Do I like it?  Yea, but it's not my favorite illuminated reticle because the cross hairs are thicker than usual, which kinda obstructs your overall view.  The charging of the reticle with the light works just as advertised, and does last about 30 minutes, but it's kinda a pain in the butt.  Also, most scopes have the inside portion of the reticle to be illuminated, while on the firefly it's only the outside portion.  Not a big deal, I guess, but I'm just not used to it.

Still, the Elite 4200s are the best value out there right now.
