25/06 Ultra 20" ??
« on: July 29, 2010, 07:11:59 PM »
I have the opportunity to pick up a 25/06 20" bull barrel.

First, Did they make an 25/06 ultra with a 20" barrel or has it been chopped?
What are the advantages of the 25/06? Cons?

Any idea what the original stock should be? It has a store all forearm and a tactical butt stock  ???

Any idea what a fair price for it would be? It looks to be in pretty good shape. Thanks!!

It's a home brew from the sounds of it. It should be 26" long so someone has chopped it. It's too bad because the 25-06 really shines with the longer tube. :-\
Ultra's had lam stocks too... this one sounds like it's got a survivor forearm on it.
Personally I'd stay away from it.

Oh yeah that's a home brew truck gun. It's a shame someone did that to an ultra.

I'm really interested in it for the receiver as the one I have now isn't a great fit for my 357 max. I also was looking for a survivor forearm so that's one less thing I would have to buy. What would you offer for the package as I would just part out the barrel and the buttstock?

I think that barrel and stock would be a tough sell. I don't know many guys who would want a cut down 25-06 barrel or one of those stocks.
You might be further ahead if you just buy a frame on here and order the forearm from Choate. :-\

Spanky,

Thanks for all your help so far. The guy wants $175 for the deal but as of now I'm extremely hesitant at that price. I had planned on selling the barrel and stock to make up for the price of the receiver but as of now that doesn't look it will happen...  :(

I wrote him a PM about the original stock and who had cut the barrel/why. We'll see what he says

MSP has a short barreled 280 Rem, he likes it, so there may be a market for it, some guys just like short barrels, they're kinda "Handi". I can tell ya, after packing my 25-06 Ultra all day and covering about 5-6 miles, I was wishin it had a 20" barrel!!  :-X

My short barrelled .280 (aka "Thunderboomer") is great first because it's accurate, second it's easy to carry through the thick woods, third it hits hard, and fourth, being a .284 I have many bullets to choose from for reloading. It does lose some for the shortend barrel but the deer will never know it and where I hunt in the thick woods 50-100 yards is a long shot. It might be better if it was a shortened 7mm-08 but I bought it this way and I like it. If your 25-06 is accurate you might like it as well.
I would worry about that stock on any rifle (or shotgun) with any amount of recoil, there was a picture here of a member who got beat up pretty badly when his gave away under recoil. That said I would be interested in the buttstock for a .22 if you buy the gun and the price is reasonable....<><....:)

I have a 25-06 in 26" and a long barrelled .280 as well. I agree it is a shame to cut down one of these fine calibers that really shine with the added barrel length and would not do it myself, but if it's already been cut and you can get it for a good price I say try it, mine worked out great...

Have you looked at the crown on that?  Recrowning a bull barrel is harder than standard contour.

I guess it's possible that it was cut down because whoever had it couldn't get it to shoot good....

OK, I have to say I am completely lost on that last one. Why would it be any harder to put a good crown on a heavy/bull barrel than on a standard contour barrel? I cannot get this to compute, and I have recrowned several barrels, standard, bull, and even octagon ML barrels....<><....:)

I'm in pretty good shape, I do 30 minutes on the treadmill everyday, as much as my knees will handle, my point is the 26" barrels aren't really a joy to carry like a 20" barreled Superlight or even a 22" standard barrel..... with a bigger bore like the 35 Whelen.
