Changing barrels
« on: July 30, 2010, 05:49:05 AM »
How does that work. Do you need to change barrels with something in the same "class" Chamber size etc. For example lets say that you had a Buffalo Classic and wanted to put another caliber barrel on it..

Depends on what frame you're talking about, the SB1 frame that comes on standard shotguns is cast iron, the only rifle barrels it's only rated for are 357 and 44 mags, SB2 rifle frames are heat treated investment cast alloy steel, those made 2000 and later can be fitted with any high pressure chambering they offer(no magnum rifle), that includes the BC which uses an SB2 rifle frame with faux case coloring, there's lots more info in the FAQs on this and many related topics, spend some time ready there.  ;)

Hey Tim,   can a 3030 barrel be used on the SB1 frame?    I have and extra SB1 that I am not using and I have been dedicating an SB2 frame for my 3030.   I thought I read somewhere the 3030 barrels could be used on some of the older (non SB2) frames,  but I cannot recall for sure.   Thanks for any info.

The real secret to fitting Handi barrels is to get about 150 frames.  That way you'll find one that fits perfect ;D ;D  Do yourself and others a favor and keep all the centerfires on SB2 frames.  No mixups, no accidents.  That's what I do.  It costs a little more, but is cheap insurance.

Some pre-'87(pre-SB1) cast iron H&R Topper models came with 30-30 barrels, I think the only reason they don't offer them on SB1 frames is they just haven't done the testing yet, and there's no incentive(Indiana pistol chambered deer season is why they offer the 357 and 44s) for them to do the testing.  I've used a 30-30 barrel on my SB1 TDC frame with factory Rem ammo no problems, but like Pete, prefer to use an SB2 frame.  ;)

Thanks Tim,

I guess I just found a reason to get a 357 barrel for that lonesome SB1 frame.  ;D

Basically, SB2 rifle = centerfire rifle/pistol chamberings and any shotgun barrel except 10ga based barrels, also Huntsman muzzleloader, SB1 = shotgun, 45/410, Huntsman, 357mag and 44mag only. As far as H&R is concerned, SB2 rifle frames made 2000 and later are the same, those made 1999 and earlier have restrictions on what accessory barrels they'll fit,  see the FAQs for more info.  All centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy, rimfire and shotgun are 1137.

Does this mean that the 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and 45 Colt are 1137 steel?

357 and 44 mags are rifle barrels, are 4140, the 45/410(morphodite shotgun barrel) is 1137, all of them come on SB1 frames.

Factory 357 and 44 mags made prior to 2008 were on SB2 frames.

Ok so with only using 1137 steel, the 45/410 is limited to standard loads only?

With all the freebore, it probably doesn't matter, but H&R will tell you standard loads only.
