Carbine barrel length
« on: July 31, 2010, 09:13:23 AM »
I have a factory 23" 375 JDJ barrel I thinking about sending to SSK for shortening & re-crowning. This is the Barrel I bought for Elk in the timber.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking 20" would be better ballanced & not so muzzle heavy.

I doubt taking off 3 inches of barrel is going to affect the balance enough for you to notice but if that's what you want, go for it.

I'm looking to do the same thing with a 23" 17HM2 barrel.  I was thinking 18-19".  Of course my 17 has a lot less hole and a lot more metal than your 375.  I've done several cutting and crowning jobs myself with good success but not on anything nearly as small as a 17. :D

I have a 21" factory taper 375JDJ barrel (check out avatar pic) and it balances perfectly if I had your barrel I would have no issue shortening it to 20"...

I am going to do it. I think 20" would make a perfect in the timber gun. I have a Lepuold 1 1/2 x 5 V-3 that would fit perfect. SSK says only one week turn around.

   I also have a 23" 375JDJ...when I want a good "timber" gun I either take my 14" 45/70 or 14" 30/30...Keep the 23" for a blind or stand..
