Just about any big bore can be loaded down. I bet cast bullets at about 1600 / 1800 fps would work well on deer or targets with minimal recoil. Years ago, I had $ burning a hole in my pocket, and came across a Model 70 African in 458 mag. It had pretty wood, so I bought it. Fired one box of factory 500 grain soft points thru it - not real bad, but they got your attention. I ended up loading a 400 grain cast flat nose to about 1600 fps - much more pleasant and accurate to boot. A buddy of mine was always busting my chops about my "elephant rifle". Couple years later, on the eve of a Catskills Mnt deer hunt, his Remington 760 in 308 broke. He asked to borrow a gun, and I gave him the 458. He didn't like it at first, but after taking a couple practice shots with the reduced loads, he settled down some. He ended up shooting a doe and a nice buck, one shot each, droped where they stood. When I sold that rifle a couple years later, guess who bought it?
