416 Ruger
« on: August 01, 2010, 01:40:55 PM »
                        ???
Found a good deal on a Ruger #1 H [Tropical] in 416 Ruger.        :)

Why I want this defies logic.       :-\

Can someone please give me an excuse to pursue this ...      :o
or slap me out of my Walter Mitty fantasy.      :(

How easy is it to download this beast for any realistic use in the lower 48?         ::)

Thanks,

Puckita, Puckita, Puckita,
416 barnes is a 45-70 necked to .416.
loading data for it is easy to obtain.
A 400 grain soft point or lead slug at 1900 FPS would be a great black bear, Hog, and deer rifle.

How light could you go?

I just have this lust for Ruger #1s.
Take a look at this Ruger #1 Tropical .416 Ruger.
I need this like I need a petticoat and a side saddle; ... and danged if i'm not trying to dream up every excuse in the world for it.

A really neat combination might be a pair of Ruger #1s in 270Win [or 300Win mag] and 416 Ruger.

                                                                     ::)

How about THE African battery: 300 H&H, 375 Ruger, 450/400 Nitro Express ]

OK, OK, just dreamin !

I think that would be a Hornady question.
they devoloped the load and if you ask them.
1 how low can  go in powder charges?
2 what .416 bullet do you sell that would work at the 1300 to 1500 FPS I want out of this rifle for deer sized game.
http://www.hornady.com/contact_us
here may even be data in the new reloading manual for it.   My Hornady manual is prior to the 416 Ruger.

Thank you.
I need to get to town and find some current manuals.

While I was trying to research online, I ran into something interesting.

In the Ruger #1H Tropical rifle line, they show: 375H&H, 416 Ruger, and 450/400 Nitro Express:

http://www.ruger.com/products/no1Tropical/models.html

In the Ruger #1H Distributor Exclusives line, in an obviously African battery, Lipsey's shows:
.300 H&H, 375 Ruger, and 450/400 Nitro Express.

http://www.ruger.com/products/no1DE/models.html

In the M77 bolt action rifle Africa line, Ruger does not show any rifles chambered for 416 Ruger.

http://www.ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeAfrican/models.html

Instead, they list it in their M77 bolt action rifle Alaskan line:

http://www.ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeAlaskan/models.html

Not sure what that means, if anything.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Just load it with the RCBS 350gr. bullet and a case full of Trailboss. Presto, a load you can shoot all day and still powerful enough for pretty much any use within 300 yds.

With medium weight range LEAD slugs one could load it to even lighter levels for plinking and practice.

The .416's are the next step UP from the three seven fives...and I mean a step UP. In both recoil and power.
Not for everyone.

Unless I win the lotto, this is just more than I can begin to rationalize.     ???
This long legged, good lookin', girl is just too high maintenance for me.            :o

From the firefights around us, I get the impression that if I just really had to have a 40+cal, there are better choices [45-70, etc.].      :)

Frankly, i will probably never need anything over 30 cal, and even then, there are the 338s and the 375s;...
... before you ever need to think about the 40 cal behemoths.     ::)

If they have the same gun in 375H&H they do have light loads for it.  The 375 is a lot more versitle.
I like my 375.  Makes my 338 Win Mag look like a 243 next to a 30-06.

Just about any big bore can be loaded down.  I bet cast bullets at about 1600 / 1800 fps would work well on deer or targets with minimal recoil.  Years ago, I had $ burning a hole in my pocket, and came across a Model 70 African in 458 mag.  It had pretty wood, so I bought it.  Fired one box of factory 500 grain soft points thru it - not real bad, but they got your attention.  I ended up loading a 400 grain cast flat nose to about 1600 fps - much more pleasant and accurate to boot.  A buddy of mine was always busting my chops about my "elephant rifle".  Couple years later, on the eve of a Catskills Mnt deer hunt, his Remington 760 in 308 broke.  He asked to borrow a gun, and I gave him the 458.  He didn't like it at first, but after taking a couple practice shots with the reduced loads, he settled down some.  He ended up shooting a doe and a nice buck, one shot each, droped where they stood.  When I sold that rifle a couple years later, guess who bought it?

You know, that is something that a lot of folks lose sight of.
The cost of a gun is really a bargain ... if you got endless hours of pleasure and entertainment out of it.
Anybody price sports events or movies lately ?

While it's no Rigby, Remington or Ruger I love my 416 Taylor.  To me it's the poor mans 416.  While it really is a handloading affair brass is easy enough to get.  I do get some looks when I bring up wanting to use it on 'bama deer.

If it's what you want, go for it. We only pass this way once. I have a friend who just spent over $2K on a 50 cal rifle with a tripod, because he really wanted it. Its overkill for anything on this planet, but the grin on his face was worth the price.

Let's see talk you out of it............ Nope can't. first off it's a Ruger #1, one of the classiest rifles out there, #2 it's in a very useful cartridge, #3 Yes it can be loaded down, almost any cartridge short of the .22RF can be loaded down. Even at 1500fps a .416 cal 400gr bullet will get the attention of most animals on the North American contenent. #4 you said yourself it's a good deal!
Looks like you are a goner Buy it. ;D

I have a 416 rem mag in a #1 ruger, only reason I bought it was because Al Gord said we have global warming and if so all those mastodons are going to thaw out in Alaska and come south I don't want them tromping around in my yard

Years ago I bought a Ruger No 1H Tropical in .416 Rigby, just because I wanted to shoot an African cartridge.  I may well never make it to africa, and I CERTAINLY cant afford a fine double rifle or Sporterized Mauser in this caliber, but the .416 Rigby was about $650.00 back then.  And it kicks HARD !!  And, I will never get rid of it.... Overkill for North America,,,,,  You BET !!!  Worth the price?   Hell, if I sold it now I'd MAKE money.......  Totally worth it !

So what is the recoil like on the 416 Ruger I watched a guy shoot one in the M77 Alaskan at the range other day he would not allow any one to shoot it (no big deal his gun not mine) but it looked like it kicked very little. I have shot 375 H&H many times and I know it kicked harder than this gun he had, it looked like a 30-06 recoil!

I'm with you.

The 416 is not that bad to fire. I've fired a 416Rigby which has a little bit sharper recoil than my 458WM (due to the heavier powder charge), but is entirely tolerable.

Having said that I use cast loads in my 458, mainly to reduce costs since I've been using 3 weekends out of 4 of the month, but I still fire several normal loads at the end of the session and I leave the range with a huge smile on my face.

I have even hunted with the cast loads and they work well (subsonics on rabbits and intermediate 1600fps on pigs) - the big bores are very flexible this way. Go the big bores!

I was also going to suggest the IMR Trailboss powder that was mentioned above for reduced loads. Full case loads (not compressed) are safe. They suggest starting at 70% of the full case to start load development.

Here is the link to the loading instructions.

Why a big bore rifle? Becuase they are fun. There is no logic involved. Stop thinking it's impractical. I have a 458, I shot alot of 45-70 type loads through it. When people bust my chops about it, I will let them shoot it. Of course I give them a magazine full of full house loads. They don't bust my chops, they think any one who can shoot that from a bench must be pretty tough and not worth messing with.

Buy the gun, be happy. There is light loads listed out there if you look hard enough.
