I don't but it's the only bolt action wood stocked muzzleloading rifle in production that I can afford. I wish Remington would have taken Mr. Ball's offer.

I'll be interested in hearing what you think of the gun once you get it. They seem to have a cult like following because they can take the smokeless powder. Couple websites of guys using theirs on everything including african game. It's supposed to good out to 300 yards depending on the shooter. Are you going to be hunting with it this year?

I'll be using it in FL with BH209, and in Kentucky with smokeless (if it's legal) and BH209 if it's not.

I have a new Leupold 2-7X33 VX-I (that I got real cheap) that I'm gonna stick on it.

With smokeless powder you pretty much have to shoot copper bullets, or copper jacketed bullets, with sabots.

Solid lead slugs will obturate upon firing serious smokeless loads and accuracy suffers. Same deal with Powerbelts, they won't hold up under heavy smokeless loads.

You can shoot with reduced loads of smokeless and shoot solid lead slugs ok.

I'm sure they don't want you shooting conicals with smokeless. If you want to use conicals they say use black powder or substitute.

The steel S46 bases came today and I mounted a Leupold 2-7X33 VX-1 in some steel Millet Angle Lock rings on my Savage. The scope was just barely long enough to fit between the rings but the eye relief is perfect.

Nice Rod. I have one similar in appearance,but its a Henry Ball custom with an extra lug.If you go smokeless try AA 5744 41 gr., a 250 gr .452 XTP, and a MMP sabot. Stone deer killer to about 200 yds. Nothing but smokeless will ever touch mine,as I like to hunt instead of clean barrels, in season. Can't beat the accu-trigger. Happy skinning.

I have had great accuracy results with home made hard cast .430 round nose and TC sabots with 5744 powder. Cheap to shoot.

In Virginia,there used to be restrictions on your projectile. The wardens would carry Co2 dischargers that fit on the nipple and puke your load right out on the dirt. Pretty savvy. Some carry magnets to check your waterfowl loads also.Some of these laws are a nuisance,but you might tote a ticket if you don't comply. The good news is that there is plenty of game to be taken lawfully.

I have some huge gas checked bullets I'd be willing to send if you wanted to try them out with some of yer blackhorn209. I've always thought the savage would be a perfect gun for these bullets if a feller didn't want to shoot smokeless. a load in the neighborhood of 60-75gr should do great i think... let me know

If you had four or five of the little plastic tubes that carry your powder and bullet, and you did not have a can of smokeless powder on your person, or in your truck, a game warden would be hard pressed to figure out whether that was Blackhorn 209, or VV N110 in those plastic tubes.
And, he also probably wouldn't care much, as game wardens are busy enforcing sensible laws.

Smokeless is legal here in North Carolina but if it were illegal that is how I would handle that stupid law.
Anyway, on my property the longest shot I can take is 80 yards in this thick brush so I could do just as well shooting black powder, I just don't like the hassle of cleaning the rifle when I need to be skinning and quartering a deer.

I have had one just like the pic since they came out, I shot every combo i could try in 2 years of shooting every weekend. I went from 200gr bullets with blue MMP up to 500 grain .458 bullets with an orange MMP using 9 0r 10 different powders. That being said and the fact that i have set 20-30 guys up in shooting ML-10`s I have found what works and what does not. Remember most loads approach 2100+ fps or over!!! Bullets have to be Tough or they act like varmint pills

   powders: AccurateArms 5744 39.0-44.0 grains and VV N-110 38.0-43 grains
   primers : Federal 209A (winchester 209 were made by RIO last year and filled breech plugs up in 10 shots or less Federal DOES NOT do that)
   Sabot : MMP ONLY! as Savage recomends
   Bullets : .451 or. .452 DIA .457-.458 with Orange MMP .452 diam 250,300 grain XTP NON mag Cheap (kills ANY whitetail made)
BARNES pitch the included sabot and use MMP (i use 300 MZ 18 feet to over 320+yrds never fails,never had one stop in a deer@ any shot angle in a)whitetail, pass thru with awesome bloodtrail, And mine ML10 and the load(44.0 5744) was loaned on a Bison hunt Dropped where it stood too and we did not recover it either)
   Shockwaves and flex tip BROADSIDE only they shoot flat BUT DO NOT LIKE BONE.
   Bonded shockwaves seem tougher!!!!
CAST lead is ok if sized .452 260-320 grains seem best BUT over 150yrds accuracy fell off
Swaged HARD LBT style kill like lightning BUT harder to tune loads for.

   if you want real low recoil (none) 225 grain Barnes XPB in a short MMP
   36.0-38.0 of VV N-110 or 40-44 grains of Accurate 5744 (my kids shoot this one)1800-2000fps
   sorry so long its what I have learned about these facinating muzzleloaders if you want to piddle and tinker you can (I DID) but they are wicked on game match the bullet to the animal.

Those loads sound a lot like what I had in mind. Everything I read says the A5744 is very reliable and the non-magnum XTPs work great.

Indy, thanks for the info. I didn't test nearly so much,but did find the 300gr. xtp mag. would keyhole with my usual MMP sabot.The 250gr. is great and flatter shooting anyway. Also they come 100 pk. vs the 50 pk. on the heavier bullet.I really like the rifles.
