How many arrows do you shoot a day?
« on: August 02, 2010, 05:15:23 AM »
In honing our skill of the traditional bow, how many of you practice daily to hone that skill.

I shoot daily, I usually shoot 40 arrows a session 6 times a day 7 days a week which equals 87,360 arrows across the shelf a year.

I got to order some new bow strings, cuz I'm going to wear some out shooting like this.  But shooting my bows is a passion with me, and I strive for my shooting skills.

How about you?

3 or 4 if I'm shooting well.  Maybe a few more if I'm not.  I try to make my last arrow a good one and not quit on a bad note.

No where close to what I use to shoot, or what I would like to be shooting.  Since I hurt my shoulder, there was 3 months were I didn't get to shoot at all and now only back to every other day or so and no more than 24 arrow a session.  I need to break down and get me a lighter drawing bow and even if I don't hunt with it, I could still be getting the practice in.

For traditional bows you should use feather fletched arrows for proper arrow flight, as I have not seen to much accuracy wise from arrows that still have plastic vanes or blazer vanes on them.  They simply will not glide over the shelf like feathers will, and can bounce away from the shelf with the other vanes.

But you can try though.  ;D

You can shoot them, but the big question is will they fly right.  To give you a good answer I'd have to know the draw weight of both bows and then the arrow material, spline strength and length.

I see Cotton also brings up a good point on fletching materals also.  Plastic vanes just were not meant to be shot from traditional bows......;)

All Hawks Kill, I have seen one traditional Bear Paw recurve one of the new machined riser types that the owner used them, as he had an elivated rest with.  When I shot the bow, I could still see some wobble.

I got twice as many in this evening as I have been getting (36) and I'm going to try and shoot every evening this week.  This weekend is the big Texas Trophy Hunters Assocation's "Hunters Extravaganza" Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  It is one of the biggest hunting shows in the country and the Lone Star Bowhunter Assocations always sets up a Free Kids Archery Range and we help kids shoot, some for the first time, it is great fun.  The reason I'm shooting more is they have a big 3D Pop up shooting match that starts on Friday and the finals are on Sunday.  I'll be expected to shoot in this match as last year I finished 5th in Men's Traditional, but I don't have any dreams of making it that far this year with the ole shoulder.  I'll be lucky if I move on to Saturday, much less make it into Sunday......

Well I was thinking, 45-47# at 28" which would give me 42-45# with my draw of 27".   But I bounce and think I shouldn't go that low and stick with something in the 50# at 28".  I feel pretty good this morning after shooting 36 last night, I'm going to put 36 more through my Chinook tonight and see what happens.  I think I could have shot more last night but there were three reasons I didn't. I didn't want to over do it, it was hot enough to fry eggs on my target, and last but not least I was running out of blood....... :o  The skeeters were so bad, and the spray didn't seem to help.  I'm going to stop on the way home this evening and get a couple cans of fogger to see if I can run them off the range before I shoot today.... ;)

First thing ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent http://www.mosquitorepellent.com

Second thing, I'm glad I have my 50# @ 28" Chiron/Samick Spikeman, as sometimes the 55# @ 28" Super Kodiak takes it toll on my shoulder as well, when I'm sore as well.  I know its not a Marriah, but it was the BEST $170 shipped insured on a used bow I ever spent.  I have no regrets getting this bow, and have thought about a second Chiron/Samick Deer Master 50# AMO 60# @ 28 TD that has been offered to me for $120 shipped insured.

Do I need it?

Nope, but it will make a good traveling recurve for when I fly over to Hawai'i  ;D

I fully understand.  In fact I'm considering selling my Samick Sage TD 55# @ 28 to help fund a Samick CA 60 Longbow or OMP Adirondack Hunter Longbow in 50# @ 28 to hold me over until I can put together enough green to get the custom longbow I want.

Cottonwood,

The Sage is their bottom of the line Takedown (MSRP about $130). The Red Stag and Deermaster are their Middle of the line Takedowns (MSRP $190 to $200).   The biggest difference in the Red Stag and Deermaster are the riser materials.

I bought my Sage when they were $99 plus shipping to have as backup bow for hunts that didn't take up a lot of room.  Both my Sage and Chinook are 55# @ 28 but the Sage seems to be a bit stiffer on the draw.  I'll keep the Chinook even if I don't shoot it much, as it is my baby.....;)

I love the way the Spikeman shoots, so smooth and nice in the hand.  This morning I went out and ruined a perfectly good tennis ball with 6 Carbon Express Heritage 150's with 165 gr tips.  I seem to remember shooting the Deer Master 55# TD at the archery shop, and yes it does draw heavier than what I even like, but it is managable.  My baby of course is my Bear Super Kodiak Grayling 55#, but this Spikeman sure runs head to head with it.

Two or three dozen a day, at least.
