I'm Stupid

Maw caught a biggun, but evidently had no idea what to do with it.

Now, most of us, paticularly in the Southeast US know pretty well that a 23 lb largemouth would put our grand children on easy street from now on, and if we ever happen to have accidentally caught one, we'd wear the tail off of it dragging it around showing it off.  Not this gal.

According to Bassmasters, or Leah Trew of Karlifornia, she caught a new world record largemouth at 22lb 8 oz, however, she and her son screwed up the weigh in big time.

First off, the fish was weighed on a scale that weighs in 8 ounce increments.  You just gotta laugh at that.  I've never seen a tournament scale that weighed less than 2 decimal places.  But a half pound increment scale?  Geez.

It gets worse.

Her weighmaster was her son.  :A

Ok, could it get any worse, well, yes it could.

Her witness was NOT a biologist.  It was some dude having a picknick on the side of the lake.

Well, surely they took some pictures.

What do you think?  They did take 1--one---uno picture of this supposed world record largemouth.  You'd think you could afford a roll of film or 2 if you had a multi million dollar fish.

Is that all?  Noooooooooo.

You know if that had been my fish, the miners in the tank at the dock would suddenly be in danger because my fish would be swimming in the aerated food filled box till everyone I knew and a bunch of people I didn't know had seen my prize fish.  Not this gal.  She released it before anyone other than those 3 people saw it.

This scale wasn't even a meat scale, it was a new fangled Boga Grip Scale that's replaced the old De-Liar's in people's tackle boxes that have more money than sense.

Like I said,

I'm Stupid

Here's some more information on this Fraud.

The world record fish caught by George Perry Weighed 22 lbs 4 ounces. It measured 31 inches long and had a girth of 27 inches.

This woman's fish measured 29" and had a girth of 25 inches.

The record prior to George Perry's fish weighed 20 lb 10 oz and was 31 inches long with approximately a 27 inch girth.

Claiming that a 29 inch fish with a 25 inch girth would be the equivalent of claiming a 5'9" man with a 34 inch waist out weighed a 6'0" man with a 36 inch waist. Neither would be very likely.

I have seen more than 1 largemouth in the 27 inch range. Generally a 27 inch LM will weigh between 12 and 14 pounds.

Here's a link to a weight calculator for Bass, plug in 29" and 25", you'll get 17.52

As much as I dislike having a camera pointed at me if I caught a new world record bass everyone that could read would know about it.  That bass would be weighted every which way on more than one scale.  Just like that guy that caught that monster bass in Spring Lake near Santa Rosa, Ca. that according to the measurements was the new world record but he turned it loose before having it weighed.  It was supposed to be some 32" with a girth of 29" which by the BASS CALCUWEIGHT comes to 24.74 pounds.  They showed a number of pictures of it in Outdoor Life magazine BUT you better believe that female full of eggs or not, if I had caught her she would have come home with me.  I would collect my money, go on the fishing show circuit.  You know Bill Dance, Hank Parker, etc. and let them pay me for my secrets of catching big bass.  Yes sir I'd be laughing all the way to the bank.   :D   Lawdog

Skipper,

The SAME Spring Lake???     I have fished this lake a few times and although it's really not much bigger than an over grown pond it does hold some big bass.  One of the best days I had fishing there resulted in the five largest bass totaling over 42 pounds according to my Zebco pocket scales.  Let me know if it's the same Spring Lake.  Lawdog

Its the one where that guy caught the 24 pounder that he weighed on bathroom scales about 10 years ago.  It BTW wasn't certifiable either.

Skipper,

That is the one.  Like I said there are lots of BIG bass in it.  Lake is loaded with bluegills, silversides and crawdads.  I have caught many a crappie there that went over the 3 pound mark.  Lost some even larger right at the side of the boat.  Speaking of boats there is NO gas power motors allowed on this lake.  Only mode of power is pole, paddle or electric.  Water is clear and clean with tons of cover.  Tules, trees and brush every where.  There has been a number of recorded(properly recorded) bass in the 15 pound plus range.  I do not for one minute believe she caught the world record bass by the measurements given but it would not surprise me if someone were to catch the new world record bass there.  Or in Clear Lake.  Lots of big bass there too.  Lawdog

The fact that its very likely the next world record will come from California makes this lie all the more worse.  There's fishin lies and fraud.  Big difference.  Adding a pound to you fish for a story to aggrivate your buddies with is one thing but adding a pound with the hope of collecting a bounty is quite another.

Skipper,

I agree.  Fraud is fraud and the person should be punished but won't.  The other night while thinking about this thread I got to thinking what a person would make if they were to catch a record buster.  Doesn't Berkley still offer that million dollars to the person catching the new world record on one of their baits?  There was a poster on the wall of a bait shop with that offer on it and as I remember there was no expiration date.  Don’t know what other rewards are out there but just the talk show circuit would pay a bundle.  Lawdog

I would say well over 5 million.  The circumstances would depend on the equipment used and how savy you were with the endorsement contracts.

Skipper and guys bigger bass have been caught like a 32lb largemouth I read it somewhere "THEY ATE IT"!!!!!!!! years ago along with a 28lber too. There are big bass just waiting for us to catch.  I'm not sure if I want it or not?? The money/prizes would be nice but the attention to the place where I caught it wouldn't be worth it?? You know a world record bass right now is worth about 1 million dollars in prizes(new truck/boat/equipment/cash)  I'm sure somewhere in an unknown place is a big bass just waiting.                                           BigBill

Like most here I wouldn't want my picture taken nor my life invaded by _ssholes from the media too so I may just release it and say nothing?

BigBill,

As much as I hate a camera pointed at me(I think I would rather they point a gun at me almost) for the kind of money that the New World Record Largemouth Bass would bring I would record it.  I could always shave my beard before telling the world, then let it grow back afterwards.  You know the money isn't the best part, all the FREE products from the endorsements Plus the money they would be paying just to have you say "ABC rods and reels are the best in the world.  I owe my success to them." for the commercials they would make.  Sure every nut with a rod and reel would be camped out on the spot where you caught the big one BUT with the money you would get you could build your own lake, stock it and keep everyone you don't want out while you enjoy the great fishing on your own private sweet spot.   :D   Lawdog

I wouldn't be shocked if the next world record came from Spain.  Yeap, that's right, I said Spain.

Back in the 50s, the rivers and lakes in Spain were dead, too much industrail waste.  General Curtis Lemay started a program to get the waterways cleaned up, when this was accomplished he flew Northern Pike, several diffrent Carp, some type of Eel and Flordia Black bass in and stocked the Ebro River.  Later several dams were built on the Ebro creating some outstanding lakes.  When the areas were flooded, villages, graveyards, grape and olive orchard along with anything left behind was flooded.

I lived in Spain for almost five years.  Had a hard time getting approval to build a boat and get a motor (Sears 9.9HP, couldn't have anything larger than a 10HP)  Rods, reels and other items could only be obtaind by ordering from Bass Pro Shop.  Several of my American friends also got it togeather, and we had formed a BASS Club.

Just about anytime you went out, you would catch a boat load of fish over seven pounds.  The largest I seen was a 14 pounder, I heard rumors of Spainards catching larger fish.  The conditions there are excellent to produce large fish and friends who are still there tell me today they are catching fish on a regular basis that go over nineteen pounds.  Few of the spanish fish for bass, they had rather have Carp or Eel.

Ray Scott (BASS) spent a cold (if I remember correctly) January day fishing with us.  That was about 1976.  It may have worked out great, he didn't catch a fish so there was no advertising in "Bassmasters".

If I ever win the lottery, I'm gonna get approval to ship my old Sketter and pick-up over there and spend a month or two chasing them spainish basses, I'm sure there are some monster there.

Skipper, I just read the measurements of the new so-called world record largemouth bass and I throught I would use Roland Martin's formula to compute weight.

It goes like this, weight equals the length, times the girth squared, divided by 800.

Weight = 29" times 25" times 25" =  29" times 625 girth squared =

 18125 divided by 800 = 22.65625.............lbs.

I don't know...maybe they had it all figured out.

Full House,

I have used that formula before to check bass that I have caught and while close it doesn't come as close as the weight calculator link does that Skipper posted.  For me the weight calculator comes within a pound of the weight of the bass I have checked.  Both the formula and the weight calculator are to be used only as a guide line.  I still don't think she caught a new world record although she did catch a BIG bass.  I know this, next spring is going to find me back at Spring Lake.  Going to spend a bunch of days there just to see what happens.  Lawdog

Using that formula on the existing world record.

(31x27x27)/800=28.248lbs.

So maybe that formula is the one Rowland used for bass on his TV show?  I don't know.  I do know, their story is incredibly outrageous, and for someone who knew enough to send off their scale to IGFA to be certified, they sure screwed up on the rest of the documentation of this fish.
