New shop

I have done a couple of sidejobs for a production company. The guy liked my work so much he is opening a shop for me. The table saw came in yesterday. A brand new delta unisaw. Man is this thing sweet. They put both cranks on the front of the cabinet and the bevel has a dial indicator. 55" beismeyer fence is nice too. I have to build an outfeed table yet so I'll post some more pics as the shop gets together.

  I've looked at the new Unisaws...  They are really nice...and expensive...  lol  I guess i'll have to keep my old Unisaw, anyway congrats to you on the new shop!

It was pricey! I believe he paid almost 3 grand for it.

I have a powermatic 66 in my garage. I bought it new many years ago for $1500. Hopefully I will get it reconnected and running one day. For now my home shop is closed so I can park my boat in there.

We'll see if it has the longevity of the older models though. I am leary of newer machinery. It might prove me wrong though.

  I don't know if the quality is as good or not?  I hear the tops are no longer aged like the old ones were, before machineing ect...

  One of my Unisaws is from the 40's ? , and the other one i bought new about 82 ? .  Both still work perfectly, and even the old one still looks origional.

  Lots of folks these days are buying Sawstops, they are expensive too...

He looked at those as well. I checked them out and gave him my recommendation.
The safety feature is great but the saw itself is so-so. All the money is for the technology. They're about 3 grand also.

Yeah, you know how it is with tools. We have a bandsaw at work (at my fulltime job) that's over 100 years old and built like a tank. Sounds like a jet starting up and will probably outlive me.

  I believe they make more than one model of Sawstop, and i'm told that the top of the line is every bit as good at a Unisaw or PM66...  I know a few guys that have bought them, and really like them.

  Speaking of "Jet", i believe they own PM now, if that means anything.

  Pretty much everything in my shop is Delta or PC, and they are all older tools now, but that's not a bad thing at all...

Pretty much everything in my shop is Delta too.  I bought my Unisaw in 1998 and I like it very much.  It was $1599 at the time.  I have a big Top Turn Delta lathe, an 8" Delta joiner, Delta scroll saw on stand, Delta sanding station (real nice!), a 15" Delta planer, and a large Delta drill press.  I am quite pleased with their product.

Someone opening a shop for you is great!  Is he giving you floor space somewhere or actually giving you a shop?  A shop has a whole lot of tools.  Anymore in the future?

  One of you guys don't happen to know anything about a Rockwell/Delta 13.5" thickness planer do you?  For some reason the pressure rollers no longer work on mine.  What ever caused them to hold their down pressure, has quit working.

  I also have a Woodmaster planer, so i haven't taken the time to tear the 13" planer apart.  But, i do want to get it fixed, as it's always been a good planer since i bought it new in about 1980?

  My Rockwell/Delta planer was made in Brazil, the new ones are made in China, and are of NO WHERE near the quality of the older one...

Zulu, he is buying all the tools, materials and paying for the floor space. I'm just building stuff for him as a side job on a hourly basis. It's not really"my" shop but I have a free pass to set it up and do as I see fit. He is also letting me use it for my own projects.

Drilling Man, sorry I can'y help, I would think there are springs that press down on the ends of the rollers to provide tension. Maybe they are worn out, it is over 30 years old.

That new unisaw looks sweet, you are lucky to have the work! I used to work in a shop that had the sawstop cabinet saw, it has it's pro's and cons. If it's a dedicated dado or ripping saw it would be fine, but changing and adjusting the brake cartridge adds a few minutes to each blade change (all 10" blades aren't 10 inches-it will cost you 80$ for a new cartridge to learn that lesson-trust me ). Good luck at the new shop! I just got called back today to the machine shop I was laid off from march of 2009 hopefully it lasts!

we also have a huge bandsaw at my dayjob it has to be at least 80 yrs old. it's a tank.

Just started on a cooking show set, He's trying to get Emerill (spl) to work with some casinos.

Couple of pics. Finished the trim today, except for the picture frames I'm putting in the openings.







And started on the counter tops.
