223 Handy with bull barrel
« on: August 06, 2010, 03:32:08 AM »
I stopped into a small gun shop I frequent and found a handi in .223 with a bull barrel, ejector with a lamineted checkered blond stock.  I never saw a stock on a handy in that color.  My guess is that it may be an after market.  He is asking $199.00 for it.  Just wondering what the perception is with regard to the price.  I found a 35 Whelen and a 243 a couple of years ago that I purchased for $150.00 each and they both had scopes on to boot.   Is he in line or is he high?
 ;D  ???

Just a guess but is this shop in eastern Pa? I saw a rifle at a gun show in Allentown
just recently that would match that and for the same price. The stock is almost yellow,
and the gun is in excellent shape. If it is the same one the turnoff to me was the serial
number prefix was either a M or N which puts it in the years you can't get a barrel fitted
to by H&R. Its been at that price for some time which is about average around here as I
have seen it at other shows in the past.   Fred

H&R made the blonde stock at one time.

This looks just like the gun I saw. It has scope rings but no scope.  It's very heavy with the bull barrel.  Do you know how these are for accuracy?

Mine's a 1:12" 24" Ultra Varmint, it shoots the Win white box 45gr JHP well under an inch at 100yds, I've never handloaded for it cuz the ammo used to be cheap at $14 a box of 40 or 50, still have 450 rounds, it's $25 at Walmart now.

Man, I never find any deals around here, and I rarely even see a Handi unless I order it online.

There was a used Handi in .243 in a shop here for I think $165. If anyone is interested I'll see if it's still there I'm sure they'd ship to your FFL.

Well, I pulled the trigger.  ;D   I stoped back and talked to the owner of the gun shop and he sold me the 223 rifle for $175.00.  ;)  I figure it's a pretty good deal.  Now I have to take it out and run it through the paces.  Since the gun was  made in 1996 it looks like it will have a one in 12 twist so mil surp may be too heavy.  I will give it a try but time will tell.

I'd check the FAQ's on the Mil Surp ammo also.  I don't shoot anything that takes Mil Surp, but I have read there and in other posts, that this type of ammo is very hard on sporting guns.  Good luck ;)

Tim,

I will have this same barrel soon.  I already have several boxes of Hornady and Speer bullets in 50 and 55grns.  Will they be too heavy for this twist?

Sorry for the kinda' off topic!

Not normally, it just depends on the bullet profile, 55gr was the recommended limit H&R used to subscribe to before they went to 1:9" twist, there were some bullets that lots of members have used for deer in their 1:12" twist barrels that weigh more, but are short for their weight, the 60gr Nosler Partition, 63gr Sierra Varminter #1370, and the 64gr Win PP.
