I think I finally got on top of the primer problem, although I did have one round that wouldn't fire, 4 hammer drops looked like it's about to go all the way through the Rem 9½, so I think that one's just a dud, all the rest worked perfect out of 28 rounds I shot at the range plus the bunch I test fired at home. The best news is the max load of 42.2gr RL17 under the Hornady 129gr SST load worked out great with good velocity and pretty good accuracy, the first two together, then the called flyer on the third round which I have share the blame with the guy shooting a braked 338 Lapua next to me!!! I tried timing my shots so he'd shoot before me, by he faked me out and snuck on in on me right as my trigger broke, it's a wonder it's even on the paper!!

I'll shoot a few more of this load as well as try the A2520/9½M loads next time.

I'm a big fan of Alliant powders, but I haven't tried any RL17 yet. I understand that it's similar in burn rate to H4350. I'm glad you got your .260 shooting.

Tim, Glad to see you found a solution. I really like using Remington primers. This started back in the 90's when as now primers were somewhat difficult to get. As the story goes a friend of a friend worked at a distributor and they scored a bunch of Remington 9 1/2M primers and I was on my last brick(I shoot 2-3 thousand rifle rounds a year) and they were all we could get at the time. On most of my rifles at the time all my groups either improved or stayed about the same. To this day I am using mainly Remington rifle primers and see no need to switch. A plus also is they don't take up a lot of space (ie, Federals)

Glad it's working out for you. I'm wanting to get out and shoot, but the temperature has been around 115 with heat index. Just about melt a man.

So I've read, but H4350 was the first powder I used with the 130gr Berger VLD Hunting, best velocity I could get was a little over 2500fps, so there's more at work here than burn rate apparently since I'm getting 200fps more with the 129gr SST, but I guess it could just be the difference in bullet design, but I wouldn't think so with the weights being almost identical. Everything I've read on RL17 by actual handloaders using it say it provides consistent velocity increases over other powders. One shooter mentioned that it looked and smells just like N550 which is another powder that QuickLoad predicts good velocity and near 100% burn in the short 20" barrel, but no one carries it here. $:-\$

I have the 7½s now too for the 6x45, so I think I'm all set!!

Fortunately I was down to my last 6 rounds when he showed up, the fella sitting on the other side of him picked up his gear and gun and headed to the 50yd range with his 17hmr after the 338 Lapau guy fired his first round!!

Relo17 is not the same as IMR 4350 also idealy suited for the 260. TRied to get some for my 6.5-06 but had no luck finding any.

Yes these muzzle breaks are sure disturbing. I hide in the club house when somebody shows up with one of these noise makers.
Found my camera again.

I think you got some loose joints by the looks of your stringing or you have a weak latch spring.

It's got a heavy latch spring, that's always upgraded when I do a trigger job and install the low spur hammer and Wolff spring, action is tight, I may work a little with seating depth, but it's actually fine the way it is, that last shot would have been much closer without the "help" from the guy with the brake, all my groups today were fairly consistent clover leafs, just not as tight as this one would have been.

+1 on the muzzle brakes almost as bad as the guy at my club who started shooting a shorty 30-06 @ 7AM today.

What is the source of the heavy latch springs? My 270 is shooting about MOA @ 100 yards with pop opens. I have good engagement on the latch, the spring is very weak.

I had to do a small amount of grinding and file work where the latch abutts the frame just below the firing pin on one of my Handi's to remove some flashing so the latch would move forward as far as possible and have maximum contact on the barrel shelf. Didn't take much.

Bed the frame rails and you won't get ANY wiggle when it is locked up. And I also install a round aluminum block in the stock and bed the stock where it contacts the frame. That way you get a metal to metal lockup when you torque the stock bolt. A little blue locktite on the bolt will keep it from backing out and the metal to metal fit will stop the wood or synthetic stocks from squeezing/drying out and loosening up.

I found an $80, 6.5mm A&B barrel at Midway so I might just get started on another 6.5...I have two Swedes I like very much already but you can never have too many shooters of any caliber anyway.

RL-17 is a double based powder which means it packs a little more punch per unit volume than the other 3 4350 powders. It also has a different bulk density so while they are "similar" they are NOT interchangeable on a unit for unit level.

Same as H414 has a "similar" burn rate as WW760, H - IMR and AA4350 and VV160, RL-17 is "faster" than IMR4350 which is slightly faster than H4350.

As with all things reloading, just changing from one powder to another - keeping all the other parameters the same - might just be what your rifle wants to give you those bugholer groups.

Another thing to keep in mind...clean your barrel when changing to a different powder load.

I don't know for sure if this was just in my case or if it is universal, but I did notice in my more accurate shooters, that the first couple of rounds were always out of the group if I didn't clean the barrel then fire a couple of foulers when I changed to a different powder. After that happened more than once I started doing the cleaning bit it as a matter of course and haven't stopped.

You'll never know unless you try.
