Caught a skunk this morning ....
« on: August 06, 2010, 05:35:24 PM »
Caught a skunk this morning, have the traps set for another we saw tonight.

Walked up to the trap with a blanket stretched out wide, draped it over the cage and carried it to the back yard.  Called animal control.  They wouldn't come because it was not a domesitcated animal.

OK.  Fish and game folks didn't want it transported.  That's fair, spreading of disease.

Trap set for a different one, may likely get it in the morning.

THEN I can get back to cannons and mortars!    ;D

It is a life changing experience carrying an armed atomic bomb 100' to a safe area.

What are you using as bait?

Roadways seem to be attracting them around here.  Seen several roadkills recently.

They are a high-profile item as roadkill around here, also! Wouldn't want to mess around using them as projectiles, though...put the emphasis on "Cleaning" when you clean the barrel! Seriously, seems to be more of them this year than last, for sure! BoomLover

Dan, In case you do not have a similar mammal, they have the capability to clear an entire area of anything pocessing a nose for long periods.  When slain they frequently give it their all and that is alot indeed.  Far better to take them alive and unharmed if you can, although letting one go can be tricky also- they have limited gratitude.

Not agressive, but might have a memory.

55 gallon drum is full of water and near the trap now.  Tune in tomorrow.

Will Tim catch another nuclear capable rodent?

Will you be able to smell it through dial-up or highspeed internet?

to be continued.

Cat,
I wonder if it's possible to cultivate an appreciation of an unpleasant scent? After all, most people would probably turn and run from the glorious scent of burnt BP hanging in the morning air. :D

It might be.  But I don't see quite where the adrenalyn rush would come from.  I've met folks that skinned them for a living - but they lived in more open spaces than most of us.  Caught a 'possum this morning.  Not quite the thrill of something of  nuclear capability.  (Actually, I would greatly enjoy a pet skunk - it would fit in quite well to my manner of living - and playing with other folks' minds.)  As a pet, we could get the little critter all the shots.  (When rabies last went through the area some dozen years ago, one of the 4 cases found in town was a skunk at the end of MY alley.)

I think you should find a young one to domesticated ...sort of .

Get them descentted and I hear they make decent pets .

Proly like a ferret .... and there must be something rewarding about them ....but I am not sure what beyond companionship ....

Companionship is a very good thing . A skunk ,well behaved would be cool !

It's just like with cannons - having a skunk, that is.  To have something cool, out of the mainstream - something DIFFERENT.

Tim, you must be one cool Cat :D, because if I ever found myself in an up close and personal situation with a wild skunk I think my adrenal glands would be pumping double-time. ;)

Ya know, this experience has taught me that the next pair of cats we get will be black and white striped.  At least one anyway.  We have 4 cats.  If I were to have 5, I would, by definition of the local zoning ordinance have a "kennel", which is NOT allowed where I live.  Since I'm the chairman of the town Board of Zoning Appeals I'm deeply involved in the results of enforcement of such rules.  So, not at THIS time.
