Where have all the good jobs gone?
« on: August 07, 2010, 06:43:52 AM »
John Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock
(MADE IN JAPAN )
for 6 am.
While his coffeepot
(MADE IN CHINA)
was perking, he shaved with his
electric razor
(MADE IN HONG KONG)
He put on a
dress shirt
(MADE IN SRI LANKA),
designer jeans
(MADE IN SINGAPORE)
and
tennis shoes
(MADE IN KOREA)
After cooking his breakfast in his new
electric skillet
(MADE IN INDIA)
he sat down with his
calculator
(MADE IN MEXICO)
to see how much he could spend today. After setting his
watch
(MADE IN TAIWAN )
to the radio
(MADE IN INDIA )
he got in his car
(MADE IN GERMANY )
filled it with GAS
(from Saudi Arabia )
and continued his search
for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.
At the end of yet another discouraging
and fruitless day
checking his
Computer
(made in MALAYSIA ),
John decided to relax for a while.
He put on his sandals
(MADE IN BRAZIL),
poured himself a glass of
wine
(MADE IN FRANCE)
and turned on his
TV
(MADE IN INDONESIA),
and then wondered why he can’t
find a good paying job
in AMERICA
AND NOW HE’S HOPING HE CAN GET HELP FROM A PRESIDENT
MADE IN KENYA.

When American companies can hire hard working folks for 25 cents a day the jobs will come back to America.  It's tough to do buisness in the USA.  Too many rules.

Interesting. I have noticed more 30 year olds dring $250,000 Aston Martin convertibles this summer than ever. They litter the roads.

Some of us remember the 1950's & 60's when Americans drove american cars and bought american goods. We had never heard of Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, etc. The only imported vehicles came from Germany and England. Most of us had never heard of Shri-Lanka, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. What in the h*&^ happened?
The USA was more advanced than any other country in the world! We used to build or grow everything our society consumed. Nobody wanted to buy cheap imported goods because we already had better quality products made right here in the USA.
Somewhere we took a wrong turn and unless we get back on track we are headed for a disaster. The Real Americans, the ones that built this country and fought for a better way of life, most be rolling in their graves.

As far as the cars go American companies started building garbage and we quit buying it.

The EPA killed many of the jobs and NAFTA , with China's most favored trade status took care of what was left.

I was in Dearborn in the 50"s and if you worked for ford you drove a ford product to work no other make was allowed in the parking lot, same was true if you worked at a g.m. plant.. In the 80"s  i was teaching (for private industry) in California and driving by a ford plant were the parking lot was filled with foreign cars every day. When I was there they announced that that factory was closing and while having a beer after work one evening some of the workers were griping about their jobs going away and when i pointed out that they exported their jobs to japan by buying imported cars they actually became quiet hostile.

Buy products made in the USA when ever possible. Trust me I know its getting harder & harder. But at least try. When you find a product made overseas that You knew was made here not so long ago. Email the company, let them know , you will no longer be buying their product. When you buy a product made here, email that company, let them know its appreciated. It may not bring them back, but it may stop others from leaving.

The number one thing that can and should be done to open up some jobs to Americans would be to get rid of all the illegal invaders.  It might not open up easy high pay jobs, but right now any jobs would help.

As far as the car thing goes, it is a mixed bag.  Back in the Fifties and Sixties if you drove a foreign badged vehicle, it was built in a foreign factory.  These days it's just as likely to be built right here in the U.S.A. by American workers.  My Toyota truck was built in California.  I know that some here don't consider California part of the U.S., but most of it still is.

The number two thing we absolutely need to do to get this country back is to quit sending communists (Democrats) to Washington D.C. and our state crapitals.

I have been working in pipeline construction for 35 years.  1) A highway permit 35 years ago consisted of making a phone call to the local highway engineer and telling him what we were going to do and how we would handle traffic.  Now it is a complete set of drawings, and 4-6 pages of paperwork.  2) This same project, if it distrubes more than an acre on he side of the road now requires an environmental permit.  This is 18 pages describing the project, what watershed it is on, GPS locations, and drawings.  In one place we had to change sides of the road so we wouldn't disturb and endangered grass here in Alabama.  3) We have to have permits to go under railroads.  More drawings and legal papers to sign. 4) All workers on the pipelines have to have OSHA approved hard hats, steel toed boots, etc.  Ditches over 5' must have shoring equipment, etc, etc.  5) The office of pipeline safety with the DOT requires all workers to have drug tests, and the pipeline installed to their standards, EVEN if new techniques and procedures are better, they have to go through an approval process.

So, to get a pipeline in may take 6 months to a year before construction can begin to jump through all the hoops.

I think he's mostly referring to welfare. I agree... why should I have to work 6 days a week to support someone who wants to lay up and have 5 or 6 kids at the state's expense? It's always great to see someone at the grocery checkout wearing the Timberlands with the tag still on 'em paying with their welfare card. China's got the right idea with "baby limits"... if someone is too damn lazy to work to support themselves and their kids they shouldn't be allowed to have 'em. I'm sick of paying for 'em. ;)

Corrupt gov't, complacent populace. The situation is not going to change. America is in a downward spiral. You must be this tall to ride this ride. Keep your hands and arms inside the car until it comes to a complete stop.

Swampman,
Yes, in an ideal world. The world is not ideal however so your response is not realistic. Some children that I have worked around require tube feedings, ongoing skilled medical procedures, PT,OT, etc., on meds that cost over a thousand or thousands a month because their insurance will not cover the drugs, etc. House and vehicles have to be modified. How many families are going to be able to afford thousands a month for the required care? What if the breadwinner is laid off?

I always like Wrangler Jeans. Made in USA right? Well my wife bought me a Wrangler shirt the other day. To my surprise the label says "made in Shri Lanka". I then went to the closet and looked at the label on my Wrangler jeans... made in Mexico with US fabric. Seems we grow the cotton, export it to Mexico then import the finished product back to the USA. That doesn't do much for US textile workers. We used to have a strong textile industry but that's no longer the case.

Here's my take on how to get the jobs back.

Feds' stop bailout money for banks, etc.

1) Feds buy only American made products, from the military to the post office.

2) If a state gets fed money for highways, etc, the state has to only buy American made products if that department gets fed money.

3) People take time to start looking at products, see where they are made.  Buy American first, then if none available, only buy from a Democratic country like the Europeans, Taiwan, S. Korea, or Japan.  China and Vietnam are still communist.

4) The Feds and State Governments are about 35-40% of the economy now, so them buying only American would help get a lot of factories back.

American factories will provide the health care to their workers, not the government, thus the government by buying only American made products indirectly supplies health care.

5) Have fleets like postal trucks, UPS, cities, states, buses, utilities run compressed natural gas.  This will cut 40% of imported oil.  Require 85% of all vehicles other than the fleets run diesel.  27 gallons of diesel per 55 gallons of crude vs 20 gallons of gasolene from 55 gallons of crude.  Thus cutting 1/3 of oil imports.  This just about gets us free from imported oil.  Money stays home, to be spent here, thus creating more jobs here.

It will take about 5-10 years, but we will be back on track, fewer imports, energy independent.

Once a factory is shut down there is no way the environmental groups will let it reopen.  As for building a new one so many road blocks will be put in plae it's really hard to make it happen.  Why do you think so many facotries are moving overseas.  People say it's for lower wages.  Partly that is true, but environmental regulations are so prohibative in this country a corporation will throw up their hands and say build it in Mexico or Canada where there is no groups blocking the way.

Look at logging.  Right now the Canadains are harvesting their Black Spruce forest.  That is where most of the OSB used in this country is coming from.  Don't talk about trying to harvest Black Spruce in this country.  Not only the Environmental groups, but the Feds own EPA is against it.

Heard a story from a Canadian logger.  Canada was doing some preditor control in the North West Territories.  A crew from one of the big environmental groups headed that way.  First none of the local Air Services would charter to take them out.  Then they found a pilot and plane and started flying out that way.  When they got to the last point and needed fuel to go on, suddenly there was no fuel availiable in town.  For two weeks there was no fuel.  Then when the Control project was finished and all the Government crews left the fuel came in.  But just enough for a one way flight out of the area.  Thyings are not going to change till we start thinking like Canadians.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

possibly give the parents the death penalty if they refuse or cannot care for the children?  give them a choice, let the kid starve- OR give their child/children to the state and pay for it with the parent(s) life/lives.  truth be told, if this nation goes third world I'll not be sharing any blankets on a cold night, food, water especially, medicine and not ammo either, with any stranger, or a cousin for that matter.  I'm almost that upset about a chunk of every paycheck going to people that I don't know, and do not care about.  If they cannot find the will to work, or the ability, that is their issue.

hey sourdough, didn't eskimos voluntarily go to die (when severely handicapped or old)  until the feds made it illegal in the fifties?  I believe it's classified as geronticide
