Yellowstone sounds to much like atlanta for me. Think I might just change my vacation to the central part of afganistan. Much safer.

If you haven't been, go :D  It is one of my favorite place on earth to visit ;D It is nature on steroids ;D  I won't sleep in a tent in grizzly country so that helps with the mauling part ;D  Drive the park at sunrise and sunset as that is the best time to watch the animals and a great time to take pictures too!  Famous last words but you'll probably run into more trouble in the city than in Yellowstone ;D  Good luck!

About 15 years ago, a good friend of mine left the bureau, and went to work with the National Park Service as an criminal investigator.  He worked Yellowstone, and several National Parks in California and Oregon.  To hear him tell it, a major park that has hundreds of thousands of visitors a year is no different then a mid sized city.  Murders, rapes, drugs, car accidents, its all there.  The only difference is the occasional bear mauling, and the scenery is a lot nicer...

Well heck Larry!  That will make Kathie feel a lot better!   ::)

But there is one BIG difference; I can carry my handgun in Atlanta!   ;D

Just play up the nice scenery part, maybe have her watch a National Geographic special or two before you go...:)

Seriously, just like anywhere else, if your not looking for trouble, your usually OK.  Oh, and they just caught one of those escapees today.  Now its just the guy who is engaged to his cousin left.

Reading about the escapees up there I found humor in that the accomplice was the "fiance and cousin" of one of the fugitives.

The bear mauling wasn't in Yellowstone, the one killer wasn't caught in the park and the other one is supposed to be in Glacier Park not Yellowstone and even then its a damn sight safer than Atlanta.

Wait a minute, Glacier park is in my neighborhood!!!

As Larry was trying to say earlier, the National Parks have all the crime that any other place does.  I cannot tell you how many times I've been in a National Park and the cops are out looking for an escapee of some sort.  I can recall all the way back to when I was about 7 yrs old, there was an escapee running through Rocky Mt. National Park and my dad had to stop the car at a road block as the cops searched cars.  I recall being freaked out by the whole thing.

My wife and I spend a lot of time in the Nat. Parks and I would say about every four years we run into a situation where there are road blocks or warnings about some escapee.  Canyonlands Nat. Park seems to attract a lot of them.  Heck, Butch Cassidy hid himself there.  There have been a few times when we were in the backcountry of Canyonlands and we had already known from inside sources that there were some shifty people back there that were hunting pots (pot hunters) and other antiquities.  We had been warned that if you run into those people to stay away because they'll just shoot you dead.  I have also heard many of times about the drug dealers that set up deals in the backcountry of that park as well.  I can recall about 12 yrs ago coming up a back road from Lake Powell into Capitol Reef Nat. Park.  It was about mid-night and we ran across a small box type moving truck back there and a bunch of people milling about on the side of the road.  I mean, this is a rough, sometimes nearly 4WD road...what the heck was a moving truck doing back there at midnight??  Who knows what they were up to....all I knew was to keep my truck moving along...FAST.  We've definitely seen some strange stuff in the backcountry areas out there.

Just because one is in a National Park where it is beautiful, soothing and comforting to the senses doesn't mean one can let down his or her guard.  Imagine what these places were like BEFORE they were National Parks.  It's wild country man!!....people had to arm themselves.

It's a pitty that safety from criminals is even a concern while in national or state parks.  My wife and I are going camping this weekend for the first time in forever and I'm debating on whether or not to put something under the car seat.  It just shouldn't be that way.

Just because your in a National Park, doesn't mean your any safer from preditory 2 legged critters.  FYI an escapee and his girl friend from Arizona was seen in St Mary's on the east side of Glacier National Park.

I spoke with someone in the know, and they believe that the Royal Canadian Mounties will catch them because they believe by all indications that they have fled the US into Canada.
