Ordered a CR-45LC today
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:24:43 PM »
And yes, I ordered from CDNN.  $247 shipped.  I should have ordered two weeks ago.  ::)  Anyway, the more I read about this carbine, the better I like it. I'm thinking about letting my 11 year old boy use it for hogs and deer.  However, his experience with firearms is limited to 410's and .22's.  I used to reload but don't anymore.  Is there a 45 Colt factory round that will get the job done without dislocating his shoulder? Range will be under 100 yards.

Thanks.

You and he are gonna love it.  I can't imagine he couldn't handle the cowboy loads.  Even the heavies are no great deal.  IMHO it's not like shooting a .45-70, a .500, or even a 7mm-08.  Some 11 year olds are pretty big, and others are not.  The central factor, is, as I see it, what's his size and weight?  It will easily take a deer at 100 yards, but I don't think I'd try a cowboy load for that kind of work.  Recoil to me, with a pretty heavy load I believe compares to a 20 ga. field load.  I'm probably not the guy to report on recoil.  I'm so old and numb I don't feel it. ::)

I'd think that the Hornady Leverlution Bullets would be awesome deer smackers.  I am reloading for mine, but it's one of the bullets I intend to try.  Keep saying that, too many loads to test hehe.

LOL, this is definitively "can of worms" material.

Thanks for the responses guys.  I guess I'll  do some comparisons when the rifle comes in.  I just don't want to induce a flinch at his age.

Oh you're in for a treat.  I orderd from CDNN also (see my post 45LC vs 45-70).  Received it last Thursday.  Shot it last Friday.  What a hoot.  I could only find 225gr Winy Silvertip for fodder.  Was more accurate than me.  Pull the trigger and wait for the hit on the plate at 50 yards.  Big and slow.  Fun.

I planned on having a .357 barrel fitted so my 10 yr old grandson would have a centerfire to shoot.  And I still may.  But now I am having second thoughts.  I have loaded some Cowboy loads that I think should shoot even softer.  I'll get back on that.  More likely to bore it for .460.

Anyway, this gun is small, light and handi ! ! !    Your going to love it I guarantee.

If he can handle a .410 then he'll be all set with standard factory ammo. I would try the Hornady Leverevolution for deer hunting.

You're gonna LOVE that .45!  I had an awsome time this weekend shooting a couple hundred rounds through mine.  No, I would not hesitate to take a deer at 100 yds with any full load and flat nose bullet.  It's an awsome little carbine and an absolute ball to shoot!  Let us know how your's turns out.  44 Man

In my gun the 250 rems and Hornady LE shoot to the same place with no noticeable recoil for me. I do have a leather lace on pad to flatten the butt.   You will also enjoy one of these sights.

I too had an awsome time this weekend with Lewis (44 Man) and a whole bunch of other great people at a shoot for Muscular Distrophy.  The .45 was one I did not take along because I was low on brass and ammo.  It has become one of my favorites.  It just fits me.  It's light, snaps right up naturally, mild recoil, accurate and deadly....ya can't ask for more.

choctaw, you'll enjoy it.

S.E.Ak , which one of those rear sights do you have?  How has the sight increased your shooting of the .45 carbine?

You will like it.  I bought one a few months ago.  I have shot 45 Cowboy Specials and 45 Colts so far.  I tried some 45 Colt loaded with 480 gr lyman cast gaschecks on an undisclosed powder charge.  Almost 1200 fps.  Stable at 25 yds.  Haven't got out to the powerline to test at long range.  Will try at 200yds when temps drop some (mid 90's now).  The chamber seems rather large, I don't expect long brass life if the case is full length sized.  The throat is short and my normal 350 LBT's won't chamber seated to the crimp groove.  I have not slugged the barrel to see what size it is, but I'm thinking a Speer 200 gr JHP will be perfect at about 12-1300 for low kick deer medicine.  I may still have a few and will try them if I do since the LBT won't chamber (great in Ruger SA).  I put the the barrel off my 500 SW on the BCC and did not light too many full bore 400gr at 1700+ with that steel butt plate.  It is Handi though!!!   My shooting has been severely curtailed in this heat.  I'm ready for 70's for daytime temp not nighttime.

Enjoy

I believe it was the Marbles Bullseye sight: http://www.marblearms.com/bullseyeSights.html. 8)

I've searched all over CDNN site before, and again just now.  They don't have a gun section on their site, just parts and eqpt.  I'm not a dealer, so maybe that's the problem.

Here's their site, you have to call and order, they don't do online firearms sales.

Man, I hate starting a topic and then dropping out, but work this week has especially sucked, and both my kids play sports so my time is rather curtailed for the next week or so.

That being said, I sure appreciate everyone chiming in.  These comments are exactly what I was looking for.  I'm also getting motivated to start reloading again.  About fifteen years ago I used to reload for the 45 Colt.  Since then I gave away my reloading equipment, but I may just have to buy some more.

The carbine should be in early next week.  I plan on putting some rounds through it next weekend.  Can't wait.

Tacklebury - I could have been more clear.  Is the short adjustable or long adjustable site from Marble Arms preferred for the CR-45LC?

Austinite,

I know 44 Man used the longer version with good success.  That is the one I am going to order.  Oh, if ordering from Midway, 44 Man cautioned that the item descriptions don't match the pictures.  Read the descriptions carefully before ordering.

Yes, if ordering from Midway, be aware that the pic for the long one shows the short one.  But order by description and ignore the pics.  They are turned around.  I called Midway before I ordered mine and confirmed the descriptions are correct for the item.  It worked, I got what I ordered.  44 Man
