That ought to be a dandy close range rifle. Big bullets goin' slow do the trick. ;D
Spanky

Spanky, buddy, do you really believe the buffalo hunters used this and the .45-70 at close range?  Hell no, they stayed back 200 to 300 yards for their shots.  Closer, they'd stamped the herd.  They'd shoot and the buffs would mill around looking at the dead or wounded one, all confused and not run off.  They didn't know where the shot came from, and the hunter was able to make many more.  If he was at 50 or 100 yards, they'd be gone after one shot......and that was with black powder trap door loads.

Pete

I was just assuming that you guys were making shorties for the tight woods with close shots. I know the cartridges have been used for some very long range shooting since their development. I've read some interesting articles about the 38-55 being used for 1000 yd. competition.
Once I got the rifle sorted out and learned where it shoots I wouldn't hesitate to take long range shots with a 38-55.  ;D

Is 38-55 brass still in short supply? A local shop has 18 boxes (20@) older Winchester unprimed brass on hand.

Yes, the brass is in short supply.  If you picked it up, I'm sure you could sell it here easily.  If you don't want to bother, just post how we can get in touch with the guy that has it.  Thanks,

Pete

I find it at the stores around by me....Gander Mt. and Cabela's.  It doesn't seem too short of supply by me.  This is the shorter version of the 38-55 brass; Winchester brand, not the Star-line.

Just Starline is hard to get, particularly the long, must be a seasonal thing for Starline.  :-\

I stopped at Jay's Sporting Goods in Gaylord, MI (They have another store in Clair, MI) Friday on my way to the shoot, and was never more disappointed.  They're a local version of Cabelas or Gander.  One of the big things on my list was LRN .38s.  Plinking for the Maxis.  Nope, didn't have them.  Just now, I'm shooting XTPs, which is not very economical.  I looked at a bunch of other stuff and it was all higher priced than I can buy it up here on Da U.P.  I left very unhappy.

Tim, If you locate your mill for a 'tailstock'  mounted on the table (and dont move the table, of course), you have a 'verticle lathe'. A toolpost with a sideways tool in it will do short job turning off the chuck with the spindle for the advance. Jig something up to give it a try and you will be ready when you need to do a real job. Its a little goofy to think about, but if you turn your head sideways and look at the machine while thinking 'lathe' you'll get the idea.
It will do a lot of what a mini-lathe will do this way without the expense or bench space required.

Unfortunately that won't work with this mill, the column will only adjust to 45º, but a great idea tho, thx.

Me too, it's really too bad they quit making them right after they got the bore and chambers to a usable spec, thanks Aaron.

Well with so many Cowboy action shooters and those looking for this caliber, it's kind of a no brainer really to put them out. I would love to have one.......as I am sure many would. Wonder if they will reconsider offering it again?
I mean how many company's put out a 38-55 ???

Not to 'jack the thread, but since I opened the can I dont want anyone following this to be confused or misunderstand.......on the mill 'as a lathe', you dont turn the head, but leave as is, as a verticle mill. Just visualize what your mill would look like laying on it's back so the headstock is horizontal, though.
You jig up a toolpost to mount on the table, holding a lathe tool properly to the work (which, like this is 'sideways') and advance via the table into the chuck held work to reduce the dia.. Then lower the spindle to 'cut up the stock'.
For filing, polishing, etc. longer stock you can actually hold the work in the chuck and to a center mounted inline on the table (then dont move the table adj.).
Like I said, its a little goofy to think about, but I have done it (even though I have 2 lathes also) just because 'inquiring minds want to know'. So if anybody wants to pursue this and has questions, PM me!
