AMERICANS WON'T WORK????
« on: August 10, 2010, 04:58:05 AM »
News showed last night where 500 people were waiting for the doors to open to apply for several hundred jobs at the state fair in Lou Ky. Many had brought chairs and blankets and had been there all night. Hard telling how many more showed up during the day but I'm guessing there were thousands, all for min wage jobs at $7.25 per hour. They had to provide proof positive they were LEGAL citizens of the United States of America. A lot of hot, sometimes real dirty work for min wage but they wanted it. Don't tell me that Americans won't work. They came in all colors and age groups.

powderman, I think the ones that really won't work, are already on welfare, or unemployment tryin to figure out how to get on welfare. We have a younger generation that doesn't want a job, they want a position. That generation will have to learn to work, because they have never had to.
Momma, and Daddy gave them video games, and an allowance, and it keeps them out of the "reality circle", for years. There are folks, that simply will not work, because they don't have to, and they know the government will feed them.
The news simply showed the line of folks that WILL WORK. It didn't show the ones sittin at home on their asses.

I agree with you powderman. There are people that want to work. There are a lot that don't want to also. When i was laid off i took any job i could find. Finally found a half way decent job and was there 3 1/2 years. When i reached retirement age i said to heck with working for a living and retired.

DEE, SWAMPMAN. Both right. My point was that all this crap from some here that illegals do the work Americans refuse to do is crappola. Scrubbing animal stalls and shoveling  dung is hardly the top of my list for employment.
Another point to go with what Dee said about  kids being handed everything without working for it. Drive by a high school someday and look at the  HUGE parking lots just for students driving to school instead of taking the bus. 90% of the vehicles there are newer than what I drive. There are a few LEGITIMATE reasons for students to drive to school, but most are only doing so cause they want to and Daddy is footing the bill. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I'm glad to read that there are people lined up to take whatever job they can find.  Shows that they still have pride in themselves and I glad to hear it.  I don't expect everyone here agree with this, but blaiming the problems of today on the younger generation is completely bass ackwards.  I'm 30 and my generation isn't running this cluster of a country right now, the old gray haired guys are.  My generation is having to move from states they call home and transplant their young families to find decent jobs.  This is still the best country in the world, but don't act like the current generation of leaders isn't handing my generation a giant goverment controlled cluster.  The high school I went to there were a couple kids with the new fancy cars, but most of them went straight to work after high school to pay those bills instead of going to college.  Those are the people that don't show up to reunions because their life peaked in high school and they haven't done anything since.  Don't give up on the younger generation just yet guys, we really haven't even had a shot at running the show yet, and hopefully we'll learn from all the mistakes we're watching today.

Blaming the younger generation has been around since the first parents had kids.  The generation before powderman thought his generation would destroy the country.  The generation before that thought his parents would destroy the country.  That line of logic makes the older folkes feel better about themselves, that's about it.  I'd just let it go...

I don't take it too hard and I appologize if it came off that way.  It's not like my generation doesn't have it's fair share of F-ups.  It's just that I want my generation to have a fair shot at that the game before we're blaimed for everything.

i once applied for some entry level work at Conoco. Dirty job, big money. Maybe 20 openings, something like 2000 applied. The written test was ridiculous ( is the pyramid more stable on a side or a point?) I got an interview but no offer. Think they thought I was too white collar to put on an air pack and crawl through pipes. Entry level work pulls an astonishing number of applicants. See how many applied for census work.

TEDDY. I took no offense at anything you said. My point was that too many parents are conditiong their kids to expect not to have to work for what they have. I had chores as a kid, back then it was simply part of being a family. Chores are seen as punishment today to some. I did odd jobs all over to pay for a new schwin  bicycle, and I did it. I better appreciated that bike because I earned it, a lot of work and sweat went into it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Bud I know what you're saying.  I have a little girl that's almost two years old now.  We're trying to raise her knowing what right and wrong are the rewards and punishments that come along with each one.  As she gets older her chores will increase, but she's pretty good about picking things up and throwing them away now too.  I have several friends with kids the same age and we pretty much raise our kids the same way.  Having said that I also witness a lot of limp wristed people in my generation who don't teach their children how to act properly in public or behave themselves.  I had a thread over a year ago mentioning a problem I had with a family member when I told their precious child "no".  I couldn't agree more that too many parents are conditioning their kids to obey the rules of the land or that getting your hands dirty is a punishment.  Hopefully for every set of parents like that there are many more who are going unnoticed for doing the right thing.

Teddy, I am 75 and I agree with you on a lot of points. This government is leaving a heck of a mess, loads of debt to deal with. Socialism leads to Communism. I was raised right and made a lot of money. We took in some "troubled" boys over the years and made men out of them. You are absoluty right. The key to this mess in a normal two parent family life style and proper raising of children. Welfare kids learn by example and are taught to work the system. I worked while in high school and drove a 37 olds, which I paid for myself, but thats another story. You get the idea.

This reminds me of the politics that are involved in hiring practices. Many years ago I was roughnecking in Wy.. I applied for a job with AMOCO Pipline. I had the experience and was eager for a lifetime job to retire from with good benefits. I got an interview but not a job. Turned out they knew who they were going to hire before they advertized the opening. They hired a girl with no experience to fill the, "equal opportunity quota". Some guys I knew that worked there said she didn't last 6 months.
To add insult to injury, not long after that, one of the guys that worked there was warned that he was going to be drug screened in a couple of days. He had been secretly smoking pot and needed a pee donor for a plan he had to cheat the test. He came to me and asked if I would pee in a small bottle he had rigged up with rubber tubing that would go from his shirt pocket to the fly in his jeans, in case they watched him pee in the cup. I agreed to do it because I had known his wife long before they got married and she and their little girl were on my mind when I decided to do it. I was pretty offended that I couldn't get a job there but this jerk and an inexperienced girl could. So being the way I am, I peed in the bottle and while I was at it I removed the inside cap liner before I screwed the cap back on. So when he turned the bottle upsidedown and put it in his pocket, a goodly amount of drug free pee drained down the front of the jerk. I made a statement about how I felt about the whole situation without even saying a word! I never got another chance to apply for a job at AMOCO again.

It happened again when I applied for a county job in Mt.. I was over qualified for the job. I was in the top 5 of 75 that passed the tests and 1 of only 3 that got an interview. The guy that got the job had little to no experience. It was widely rumored that he was seen wining and dinning the county supervisor shortly before he was hired. I also heard that the supervisor didn't like the people I worked for and would never hire anyone from that company. Lucky me! It seems like hard work and integrity aren't enough to land a good job sometimes. Guess I need to work on my political skills.     ???

That sounds more like rough luck than poor policital skills.  If the company is hiring people based on wining and dining then you're probably better off not being there in the long run.

I think that something like 90 percent of white collar jobs are now filled via networking (vs job posting). Ie, you know someone.

The thing is that in some sectors it is required buy law or company policy that they have to advertise job openings in a effort to appear like they are using fair hiring practices. So people take the time to apply, take tests, interviews maybe take time off from their present job and stuff to try for a job that is basically already filled. They just put you through the motions to satisfy the requirements. When it comes right down to it, I have been on the other side of the dog and pony show myself. But I got favor for being a good hand. Not because I was kissing up. I tried the technic of kissing butt to get ahead. But it just left a bad taste in my mouth.......so to speak.    :P

I agree with most everything said here about the kids today. My daughter is almost 19, still lives at home and getting ready to start her second year of college. She has never been handed anything other than I bought her a used car. She works at wally world 32 hours a week, a diner on the weekends, and does work study at school. She pays her own insurance, gas, cell phone bill, and upkeep for her car. Plus carries a full schedule at school, deans list also. I think it's not the kids of today it's their parents that lets them run wild.

I agree with Powderman.  Sure there may be 10 sitting at home for every 1 that showed up.  The point is that an American showed up, more people than there were jobs.  That goes against what the liberals always wish to spin when they say 'these people perform tasks that Americans won't do'.  That's utter BS.  Desperate times call for desperate measures, and panty waiste or not, people will do what they have to, whether they like it or not.  Sure they may want a cushy office job with full benefits, but until that comes along, they'll push a broom or pick an orange to get a pay check.

When I gradumumdated with my BS in Civil Engineering, I couldn't find a job around here to save my life.  I roofed for a guy that payed minimum wage.  Did it until I found something better.  There is always going to be a layer of our society (and it sickens me) that will prey on our social services and generation after generation of them will slither through the cracks, sucking good hard cash out of system that was designed to help the needy.  It's a fact of life.  But blast it, you can't let that layer be used to judge all Americans; you can't say that no one will work and do these tough dirty jobs so let the illegals have them.  You can't on principal for one thing (because duh, they're illegal).  But the fact is there most certainly is another layer of society, a layer that I have counted myself a member of in the past, that will do that nasty job to make money to get by, hoping for the brighter future, waiting for that job to come around that you're qualified for but just isn't to be had at that moment in time, in that place on the globe where you are.

I could have done as many others I graduated with, moved to North Carolina where the Civil field was flourishing.  I chose to stick it out here in Southern West by Gosh where I grew up and where all my durn folks were.  I'm glad I did.  I'm also glad I had to make it through that tough time between graduation and finding a job, because having passed through that crucible, I know what 'stuff' I'm made of.  I know what I'm capable of doing in spite of what people insinuate when they says 'Americans won't do those jobs'.  They can eat those words.

I have two boys.  First was raised from the age of 3 to 16 by his mothers family.  Then he came to live with me.  I turned him around on a lot of issues, but I could not get it through his head that he had to start at the bottom.  He also felt that an education was of no big importance.  Also no matter what he thought about the Boss, that person was still the Boss.  Did not take, kid was changing jobs every six to eight weeks, because the Boss was stupid he claimed.  He would get mad because he wanted to be the Boss, he did not want to work for someone else.  He could not understand everyone has a Boss, even the Boss has someone they work for.  He kept thinking he should be starting at the top.  He either got fired or quite, so many times he could not get a job anywhere.  When he dropped out of school I said either get a job and help pay half the rent or hit the road.  He laughed saying I could not throw him out, wrong.  I moved to DC to be with the wife.  I had stayed in Anchorage so he could graduate from High School there.  It took him hitting rock bottom before it finally sunk in.  Today he is an E-6 in the Navy, and they sure started him at the bottom.

My second son is still living at home, going to College.  He has worked at some easy low paying jobs, and some pretty rough good paying construction jobs.  Everywhere he has worked I have recieved compliments on his work, especially the construction jobs.  But you can say the kid is hungry, so to speak.  He has grown up going to a private school.  Many of the kids there were from wealthy homes, and he went to those homes and saw how the rich folks live.  Sky quite that private school on his own, saying he could not stand those rich spoiled brats anymore.  He had enough credits to graduate a year early, but chose not to so he could play high school hockey.  Now he has signed up with the Marines.  Upon graduation he starts flight school.

So I have to say, the kids of today are not all a bunch of freeloaders.  Yet there sure is many of them out there freeloading off the government dole.  I blame some of the parents, but not all.  And our public education system for telling them about so many programs that they can get for free, and how they have rights that the parents can not take away from them or stop them from enjoying.  Sky came home after the first week of going to the public school system, and told me the things the teachers had told him, knowing he did not get this information at the private school.  The whole time he was thinking RIGHT, my Dad would knock my head off if I stood up and told him that he could not stop me from doing that, or acting that way.  Sky and I had a great understanding.  Sky got his last spanking when he was six, after that we sat down and discussed our differances like adults.  We treated him as an adult and he acted like an adult.  I have to say, some of the sleeze balls that graduated from North Pole high, I would not hire to clean stalls.  I would not want to subject my horses to that kind of scum.

I spent 30 years working for the Government.  Anytime a position came open, we knew who we wanted to fill it with.  Sometimes we were able to get that person, sometimes not.  It depended on who applied and what their qualifications were.

Here in the Fairbanks area, if you don't know somebody you won't get a good paying job in the private sector or the State.  And the oil companies hire in Texas and Oklahoma.  I'm wondering how people from Kentucky are getting hired to work in the big Gold Mines here in Alaska.  Guess they know someone.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough,
I can relate to the story about your first son. I am going through the same deal with my daughter. She started out life with her mom. Not good. When I was allowed to get involved she was already messed up. After I quit feeling so sorry for her and bailing her out of her messes all the time, she had to change her way of thinking or starve. The "tuff love" is working and now so is my daughter. Bad attitudes and stuff is much harder to deal with the older they get. Better to start them out right in the first place, if you have the chance.
