Powder Pellets ?
« on: December 02, 2003, 02:36:08 AM »
I just picked up a Traditions pioneer model 50 cal. Can I use powder pellets in this or does it only take loose powder?

Thanx

check their catalogue. I only saw 1 flintlock that accepted pellets, that on ehad a removeable breech plug. Otherwise, I'd say loose powder only. Anyways, pellets cost almost double  the price as loose powder, with no benefit.

LKVL,..... I'm not sure "why" you would even consider pellets,.... "loose" powder is much more "versatile" when work'n up a load for yore rifle!!

And,..... like Upnorth mentioned,... a "lot" cheaper!!

The Traditions web site shows the Pioneer as a percussion pistol, so am I right in assuming that is what you have?  In that case you will probably not be shooting the high power loads, and a single pellet would do.  Only way to decide if pellets will work for you is to try them.  Having said that, I agree with the others that loose powder is a lot more versatile.

Good shooting, have fun.

I looked on thier website also and didn't see it listed. The barrel is marked Pioneer 50 cal. It's looks like a hawkins. Anyways I'm not sure how old it is but it has never been fired.
I can see the reasoning behind using loose powder. I'm new to this so that's why I'm asking. Sometimes the sales people in the stores don't know any more about this than I do. What do you guys recomend for bullets?

LKVL,.... It's probly got a 1-48" (or slower) twist,.... I'd try a .490-.495 patched roundball!!
