cleaning brass flasks
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:19:52 AM »
hello i have 2 cva brass flasks that i picked up in a trade but would like to clean them up as they are pretty tarnished on the outside and black and slightly cruddy on the inside.  I know this is for purely cosmetic reasons.  anyone have any suggestions? I tried a little flitz on the outside of one and that seemed to work, but looks like ti will take a bunch of elbow grease.  I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on disassembling them and putting the parts in my brass tumbler?  these are the tube type flasks where you can take the top and bottom off.

Thanks,

You could try soaking it over night in vinegar. That would most likely take off any light corrosion. A tumbler is not a bad idea either.

A case tumbler just isn't large enough to allow big items to really tumble, they tend to remain in one place and wear away one side. Personally I like patina on my muzzleloading rifles and accessories but for one of those tubular flasks I'd just polish it with fine steel wool.
