New Reg - Which pistol cartridge?

For short-range areas, Idaho now allows "a pistol using straight-walled cartridges not originally developed for rifles."  I had planned on getting the 357 Maximum to shoot deer at extended ranges when they originally proposed a maximum diameter of .357.  Now there is no stipulation on caliber, so is there a better long range deer cartridge that would meet the state's requirement?  I think I might be overlooking some options.  My plan is to use my T/C Contender.  Thanks

There are some that are more powerful, but when you said "Contender", that word ruled them out. I'm a .44 guy, personally, but the .357 Max. is probably the optimum straight wall for that Contender platform, in that it has a bit flatter trajectory, which you seem to want.

+1 on 357 Max. Also consider 445 Supermag or 454?

The .454 won't work in a Contender, the pressure is too high. The .445 Supermag will, but doesn't offer an improvement in trajectory over the .357 Max.

Go with the 357 max and a 180 Hornady XTP. Properly sighted in 3 inches high at 100 yards you can hold in the center of a deers front shoulder from point blank out to about 200 yards and kill it without worrying about hold over. I have killed deer with my 10" 357 MAG out to 107 yards with this bullet and it does a number on them.

I guess maybe I will still go with the 357 Max.  Hope they are not to hard to come by.  Are they easy to reload?

I think you've chosen the best straight wall round for the Contender platform. The Max will give you good power and distance. Reloading is as simple as loading any other straight wall pistol round with carbide dies. Just remember that the Max uses small rifle primers. Lots of reloading info on this round. Good luck on your choice and good shooting.

Yep, crimp on those is a good thing. Just how much is up to you. I recommend a firm crimp, not killing it, but firm to let the pressure start to build from the magnum powder you'll be using with this round. Different powders prefer different crimps. I'm a Lil Gun fan and it likes a firm crimp on whatever I load it in. Other 357 max shooters have their favorites too, H110 is a popular powder. Lots of powder choices but I recommend you stay with the heavier bullets 180 grain and up for hunting.

Ken is right of course, I was thinking "Encore"....

A friend has a 445 Contender 10" and it shoots well. Agreed you'd gain nothing in trajectory, but plenty in whallop... on both ends  ;D

Seems everyone prefers the Max though...

+1 on the Max, but I would not use the 158 gr loads.
180 gr or above pack more energy at longer distances.

I used a stout load of IMR 4227 with various 180 gr jacketed bullets when I shot IHMSA. I got much better accuracy out to 200 meters when I did not crimp. Uncrimped was about a 50% smaller group. If your case mouth tension (bullet pull) is high enough, crimping is not required in a TC.

However, when I went to 180 gr cast bullets, a good crimp was mandatory - bullet lube (plus a softer engraving bullet) reduced the bullet pull and velocity & accuracy became very inconsistent.

The 375 Winchester was, but there was also a 375 SuperMag for the TC.

I'm thinking the 375 Winchester came along with the Big Bore 94 line of rifles and calibers. A souped up version of the 38-55 if memory serves me correctly.
