« on: December 02, 2003, 04:12:53 AM »
I bought a new in the box scope for $15.00 from local pawn shop. It's one of the old Bushnell Phantom scopes. My problem is no base was in the box I think B Square made the base for Bushnell/Thompson center years ago.I can make the base in the machine shop where I work but finding one would be alot easier.Anyone know where I might find a base?

Try e-bay, seen them on there before. Also try asking in the classified section, someone may have an old one they're willing to part with.

What the heck! Get 'em both. You may not get the one you're bidding on now, so use the buy it now option, on the other one for a sure thing. You will find a use for it, sooner or later......................Bug.

Plus $4.50 shipping! I think I'd talk to Tom Krupinski before I'd do that. He answered your post in the classified section.

wheelgun,

I have one of those ‘scopes also if it is the ¾ inch tube model?  During the late 1970’s or very early 1980’s I put it on a 1st/2nd year production Ruger Security-Six 357 Magnum.  Back then, there weren’t many handgunners in my area, let alone ones who shot ‘scoped handguns!!!  This particular Security-Six would hit 12-ounce beer cans filled with water at 65 YARDS…YEA, 65 YARDS with a moderate charge of Unique and a 158 grain Hornady bullet (don’t remember which bullet).  Fellow shooters were damned impressed!  NOW, we all have handguns with ‘scopes and accuracy is amazing with today’s optics and handguns—be it wheelguns or single shot pistols.  The base was mounted where the rear sight of the Security-Six was mounted.  The screw that held the rear sight/’scope base in place finally stripped-out.  It was a poor system at best.  I was lucky to have a local gunsmith who re-drilled the stripped-out thread and re-tapped it.  I now have the original rear sight in place and I am glad of that.  The Security-Six is still a good shooter with my cast bullets and the open sights.

I guess what I am getting at is the fact that this ‘scope, by today’s standards, ain’t all that great.  Field of view was terrible and parallax was a problem.  Do you really want to put money into a base when you might put that money into a good ‘scope of today’s productions?  Just a thought.  I still have mine, but it ain’t going on any handgun that I have.  Good-luck with your venture…BCB

I have an extra 22 hornet barrel for my contender that I am planning on putting this scope on.I know it looks like a weak system but it's just a plinker for around the house.I got the scope cheap so might as well put it on something if it don't work I'm not out much.

wheelgun,

Didn’t mean to sound discouraging with my post!  In all actuality, that little inexpensive ‘scope held up well on the Security-Six.  And as I stated, the accuracy was really good using it.  Really, the top strap on the handgun couldn’t stand the recoil and the screw stripped the hole in the top strap.  I suspect the Thompson barrel will mount the base using all 4 screw holes?  That will never strip out!  I am certain the little ‘scope will hold up to the recoil of the 22 Hornet.  I’d say you’ll end up with a good 75-100 yard shooter.  Good-luck…BCB
