Forester Scope mount question

I have a Sako Forester (L579) that is currently topless. I ran across a set of Refield bases the just slide onto the Sako grooved bases giving you the standard base for Redfield, Burris, Leupold type rings. I put the bases on and there is no way to secure them except with friction. No set screws, nothing. Is there anyone familiar with these type of mounts? The only way I can see they will work is to take a brass hammer and drive them on really hard. The Sako grooved receiver is angled so that recoil will drive them on tighter. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a set but, never used them.  If I were to I think I would drill and tap a set screw.  I like Sako rings.

Interesting....I have an 85 and use Leupold qd mounts...all I could find and was too rambunctious (sp?) to wait and order SAKO. The leupi's have a side allen screw with a tension piece.  Seems pretty solid.  I still like the idea of drilling and tapping and may still have it done.

My 2 cents:I would never drill and tap the dovetailed receiver of a Sako.  In my opinion, you immediately lower the value of the firearm.  The dove tails in the receiver will securely hold the bases you have.  They are held on by more than friction.  They have set screws in the bases and they will anchor the bases to the receiver. Ask me how I know.  I have 5 Sakos and at least one of them has had the bases you describe on the rifle (.30-06) for 42 yrs.???

It does not sound as though you have the "same" bases as, the OP stated his do not have set screws.  I have a set such as his and have never used them due to the same concerns he has.  My thought was to drill and tap the mount not the reciever. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.

sgtt, My bad.  Dogshooter,  Looking through some odds and ends, I came across some Weaver bases for a Sako.  They slide on and have set screws that hold them on.  They utilize the Weaver style rings.  They are yours if you want them.  Let me know.

Have you looked at S & K Scope Mounts?

You may want to epoxy the bases on also.

Thanks for the info guys. I tried to mount a scope but just didn't feel good about the bases not having set screws so I ended up getting a set of Leupold rings and they work fine.
