WHAT CAUSED IT?

This morning I caught a young male coon in a coyote trap on top of a ridge.  It can be seen in the foreground of the picture.   It's hair and fur are fine over all the body except right on the belly and inside hind legs.  Anyone seen this before and/or knows what would cause it?

Joe,this coon obviously suffered from a bad case of jock itch.If he had used tinactin, he would have been cured.
 On a serious note ,I have never seen anything like this before.I have had a coon with mange--but this is a curious one.

Tom;
  I have trapped and bought 1,000s of coon and this is a first for me.  I am going to skin it in a few minutes and see if I can find anything underneath the pelt.  I am wondering if perhaps it had been snake bitten and fevered with the resulting hair loss and then healed.  Just a wild guess but where he was caught there is a big rattlesnake den where I have caught 3 diamondbacks over 6 ft.

Boggy;
  I checked the coon carefully and then skinned it.  There is nothing on the outside to indicate what had occurred.  On the inside, it was prime and absolutely no sign of a old wound or bite, etc.  This one has me stumped.  Here is a pic of the coon (both back and belly) after I skinned it.  Notice the good long guard hair right up to where it is bald.  

WQ:  It must have gotten into your stash!  Sure not mine :lol:  I don't need that sort of med. :shock:

This is just a guess but maybe it couldnt handle be flea ridden as well as all the other coons and just plain scratched all its hair out of there .

Dan;
  I guess it is a possibility but I didn't find any fleas on the coon.  I am very careful about bringing home anything with live fleas.  If it has fleas, I put it in a plastic garbage bag and spray it before I get to the house.  Reason:  I have a beautiful collie that loves to sniff all my animals and I sure don't want him having fleas and I also have some cats around that I try to keep flea free.
  Do you think that the coon would be showing some scratch marks or red (from scratching) rash if it were fleas?  There is no visible signs of scratching or itching.  It almost looks like all the hair was just burned off without burning the skin.

It may have been caused by a severe injury that healed over and just no fur grew back there but that would just be my guess

Ok , omne more guess . When it would den up , whether it be in a tree or in the ground , Its den entrance made him rub is belly every time he came in or out .

Hey that loss of hair won't hurt none.  He'll still make a good hat and if they match up the bald spots it might just keep the hat from slippin down over yoour eyes  :P .

  I think I need some of that hair club stuff myself. :wink:
  I still have not found out what caused it.  I thought maybe fire, but ruled that out since if you notice, there was still plenty of hair on the business part of the sheath.

Road rash/muffler burn.A driveshaft can remove remarkable amounts of hair without bruising.
