Different hammer extension
« on: August 13, 2010, 02:25:18 PM »
While I was looking at the brass spacer on the other thread I noticed this hammer extension on ebay. For $7 shipped I figured I wasn't out much if I didn't like it, so I bought one. The guy shipped fast. I bought it Tuesday evening and it was in my mail box Thursday. The extension itself is a little short. The uncle mikes type I usually have the extension on the left side. This one I had to put on the right. It fits nicely and does not hit the barrel release. The end of the extension is a little sharp on a bare thumb, but probably wont notice that if wearing gloves. I secures with an allen screw and seem pretty secure. All in all for $7 I think I'll order a couple more. Just thought others might be interested. I did not see any manufacturer or distributer names anywhere.

How's the weight compared to the H&R/Uncle Mike's extension?

They seem lighter to me. I could weigh them later when I get home from work

That looks exactly like the hammer extension on my1974 Marlin.  They don't make that style anymore.

It looks like an old TC hammer extension. I have one and they are made of Aluminum.

I marked the same extension. Just didn't get back to order one yet. Thanks for the report. How does it compare to the uncle mikes extension?

Hammer extensions at Numrich.  Also the top one might be the small one mentioned in the FAQs for the drilled hammer.  No picture though.  All seem cheaper than ebay.
just fyi...

How's the weight compared to the H&R/Uncle Mike's extension?

Tim

It weighs 3.1 grams. the uncle mikes/H&R extension weighs 8.3 grams.
I only have two complaints. The extension itself is about 1/8" shorter than the uncle mikes/H&R. for me that makes it just enough that it is not easy to use on the left side of the hammer, and it is kind of rough on the thumb. That being said I did order 2 more.
They are cheaper at Numrich but with shipping from Numrich I bet it works out close to the same cost

Is it aluminum and is the set screw on the spur side or the opposite side? Reason why I ask is it may make a good platform for a lighter alternative with little alteration as I've done with an Uncle Mike's., but being steel with an aluminum spacer and socket head screw, it weighs 7grains more than the Uncle Mike's, an aluminum 8-32 screw and base to mount it on would be nice.

Numrich has a better pic, says it's alloy and shows the set screw location, it may still work, just cut the spur off.

I made mine from a piece of 3/8" aluminum rod, with a small 6-32 set screw to hold it in place. Make as long or as short as needed and no need for that long allen head screw, saves lots of weight.

Mine's just a prototype to help others that don't want to drill and tap their hammer, I've been using Win M94 extensions, they're even smaller and lighter at 30.9 grains, unfortunately they don't make them any more.  :'(

I ordered one of the Ebay hammer extensions, he sent 2 of them with a thanks for all the info here on GBO which I thought was very nice of him!!  ;)

I cut the spur off and slimmed the extension down a bit so it sits lower on the hammer, I used the mill, but it could be done with a file or a power tool. added a short piece of 8-32x ¼" threaded aluminum spacer and a 1" socket head 8-32 machine screw, cut to desired length, both available from Ace Hardware. They didn't have any aluminum screws, but SmallParts.com has slotted aluminum screws that would save some weight, weight is 80.8 grains compared to 126-130gr for a factory steel extension and it's very comfortable to use unlike the standard spur on the Ebay extension which is a bit short and very sharp on the edges which could be rounded a bit.

Here's a pic of the modified extension installed on a bobbed hammer, mounted just high enough to clear the barrel release, in fact I had to radius the lower edge to clear, the extension is just a little shorter than a factory extension and weighs 70.1gr, it's been treated with Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black.

Below that is the unmodified extension on the same rifle, Leupold VX1 in low Burris Zee rings on an H&R rail.

I found with stock ebay hammer extension and unbobbed hammer the scope has to set far enough back that it clears the objective bell. I've only been able to use them on 2 of my guns that have Simmons Pro Diamond 4X32 scopes on them and both of these have been drilled and tapped and I used weaver #62 scope bases, I also tried one one my Rossi 357 which has the lower profile hammer and it hits the barrel release button

You can take a little off the offending bottom edge of the extension to clear the barrel release, or you can remove the back edge of the barrel release, I've had to do that on several rifles with the old style hammers, it just depends on how high the barrel release is on a particular barrel/frame combination.

Here's an alternative for a virgin hammer, radius the top of the extension to add some clearance, or file the entire top of the extension so it's not so high, you can also do the same thing on the bottom so it sits even lower, or if it hits the barrel release, mount it higher on the spur, lots of option. This one hit the scope before I took about .040" off the top and chamfered the top edge, also rounded the entire top edge of the spur on the extension so it's not so sharp.

Here's the aluminum screws for the ebay/Numrich hammer extension, Ace and I think True Value have 8-32 aluminum screws for screen/storm doors, also aluminum extensions.

Anyone think this one could be modified for Handi use?  Update 17 OCT 2010: The answer is no, unless you heavily modify/grind the extension to provide clearance for the Handi hammer.

I found it here. http://www.gunblast.com/Taurus-CircuitJudge.htm

The only way to know is order one and try it, I looked for cheap shipping sources, didn't find one, everyone wants $8 or more to ship a $5-$6 item or $4 shipping for a $10 item, Rossi may be the best source.

That is certainly a possibility, it's a gamble. I have lost more money to things much more foolishly than this. ;) ;)

Is there a problem with the Uncle Mike's spurs?
