Barrel cleaning/ wonder lube
« on: August 14, 2010, 01:18:54 PM »
I know that the subject of wonderlube has been beat to death but I have a question.  When I spend a day shooting I use the standard method of hot water and soap  cleaning method.  I find that I can get the patches to come out clean but when I put lube on a dry patch to coat the barrel, the patches become dirty again.  Is this a build up that I am seeing or what??  The patches dont come out black rather a mild brown color  not like rust but like a waxy residue.  I do use wonderlube as a patch lubricant and as a rust prevenative.  Any thoughts on the subject?

When I clean with hot water and soap, I use a nylon bristle brush to clean the bore as I pour the soapy water in it.  Let it drain out the nipple or flash hole. That seems to work well.  A 100% white patch requires some scrubbing.  That said, I dont think a little discoloration is a big deal.  Wonder lube does a good job of preventing rust.  Its a great patch lube.  I can shoot all day using Pyrodex and patched round balls lubed with Wonder Lube without having to scrub between shots.

It's two parts,,Rust AND wax build up from the Wonderlube.

The HOT water used during your cleaning does lead too "flash rust". Switch to luke warm/tepid temp soapy water for cleaning and the flash rust will not occur. I also run some 90% Isopropyl or Denatured Alchohol in the bore after washing and drying the bore. The alchohol will mix with any remaining water and assist evaperation,,just pour some in, slosh it around and pour it out,,you can even pour it back in the jug and use it again.

Then I lube the bore with a good gun oil,, ALWAYS carefull to remove the oil before shooting the next time. I usta use the bore butter an wonderlube stuff,,got tired of the left over gunk and build up in the bores,, accuracy was falling off too,,
