Tikka T3 338 Federal Questions
« on: August 14, 2010, 05:16:13 PM »
Guys I am going to order a 338 Fed Monday. I will be putting a Weaver K6 on it and shooting 210 Grain Nosler Partitions (if they will group). Does this rifle come with the scope rings or do I need to order new rings when I order the scope? I am not paying Sako what they want for rings and bases.

On the rings deal, the DNZ rings, do they sit flush or rise up off the receiver? I think the one piece mount would be nice for alignment purposes. Looking at Talley also.

I'm about to pop for one of these, on close out and then 10% off the 520 price to boot.  PLUS a free shotgun on any Tikka purchase!  Now the shotgun is not much, but they have $189.00 price tag on it, should be able to get $100 bucks for it new, brings the price down to about 370.00 for a new one.  Wasn't gonna buy anymore guns for a while, (at least another week or two ;D), but this is to good to pass on.  DP

I do not see where there is a niche where that rifle will fit , but they are indeed a nice rifle to use . I have a 338 T3 and enjoy it . Canadain imports still command the buck and price's start just under 800 in our Dollars.
If you can find one in 6.5x55 -grab ,it as they are not being imported to America anymore

The T3 comes with rings, and while some condemn the factory rings, my 3-9X40 Burris has been sitting on my T3 300 WSM for just over 500 shots. Never have had any problem with the rings, nor has the scope needed any adjustments after the initial sighting-in.

Put 20 rounds thru mine yesterday, just to get the scope dialed in and get familar with it.  Wasn't able to get groups I liked with it, just to lively off the conveluted rest I was using.  I have a VX-1 2-7 on it with the LR retical, gonna like it when I get it sorted out.  I am going to find a Limbsaver pad for it, but it wasn't painful or leave marks.  I was using a new rest that wasn't working good at all off the back of my truck box.  DP

Like some of us new to the 338F , we were not impressed with the rifle groups @ first .I took mine about a 100 rounds to settle down. So factor that in if your reloading.
Federal fusion seems to work nicely for factory loads .
I size up 308 Winchester brass and load 200/215  over 47 grs of Varget ,Federal match primers  while some use Federal Mag in there's.My rifle started to shoot the 215 in the green box, but settled on 200 gr.Accubonds for the polymer tips now. The speer 200 Grs also shoot well.
The manual states not to brush the bore for cleaning , so mine has never seem anything but a patch.and some foam from time to time, and it shoots coverleafs .
Hope you enjoy your gun.

I've read on here that they can take a while to settle in, no problem, just means I get to shoot it more.  These Tikkas are sweet with such a smooth action and crisp trigger.  Come to think of it, I've paid good dollars and not had a nice a trigger. :-\  I was using the Fusion ammo, looking around for dies now.  Have you ever tried Ramshot's TAC powder?  I'm gonna try some of that in the 338 Fed and my 358 Win.  DP

I have a Sako 85 in .338 Fed that took 100 shots to "settle and clear". It was shooting 2-3" with factory ammo and best handloads, it is doing 1/2" now.

Tac powder was rated as one good powder for the 338 F as rated by the gun Mags. , but I could not get my hands on any to your North here in Ontario Canada . If I have some time I find the info.
Trigger ??? . They can be adjusted !! I personly feel tikka's are the best out of the box as is.( Many agree) then I like the Savage Accr. trig too. Have it guaged to see if it is within spec.
I have one rifle here set to left off in a strong wind , but could not use it to hunt, as it set off is in ounce's . After shooting this gun my A bolt feels more like the safely is still on , trying to shoot it .I am going to get the A bolt reworked to 2 1/2 Let off probably in the off season.

What powder are you using with what weight and brand of bullet ?

I am using Varget with 200 Nolser Accubond in the tikka. The powder seems to give the best groups , but have yet to try tac . As for bullets , they all seem to work good in the 200/215 gr. not to notice much differance for hunting .

I am using RL 15 compressed charge (maximum-0.5 grain); Hornady 200 gr SP bullet; Nosler premium brass (.308 necked up) necksized only on the FL die adjusted to touch the shellholder on the upstroke but not lower, and ever so slightly stiff to close the bolt; and CCI BR2 primers. I get 5 shot groups at 100 yards usually in the 0.5-0.8" range, but sometimes the groups are 0.3" one SRH (single ragged hole), and sometimes i get a flier that opens the group to 1.5". I can live with this, as i have 2 pounds of RL 15 powder and don't want to spend too much on ammo used for hunting  deer at 100 yards at most. The good part is that the POI is consistent in time and at different temperature ranges. I suspect that some of the fliers and larger groups are due to my shooting, but some are probably due to rifle, wind, etc.
I have no chronograph, but i suspect that i am shooting at about 2500 fps, about max for this combo, and i have no pressure signs whatsoever, the brass does not even stretch or expand.

Nosler premium brass is incredibly consitent and of high quality. I weighed them and checked them for burrs, flash holes, primer pocket uniformity, etc, and they are of incredible quality. I fired some cases 5 times and they have the same dimensions as new, i did not even have to trim them.

I did try Hogdon Benchmark before the RL 15 and i got very poor results, either because the rifle did not agree with the powder, or the bullet and powder did not match, or it was too hot in July to develop loads, or whatever.

Interesting thing about groups in .338 Fed and Sako 85: if i shoot 5 rounds as fast as i can, the groups are smaller than if i wait 1 minute between shots; this, at 60 F temperature. With my 6mm remington and my daughter's 7mm Mauser, i can only print sub MOA groups if i wait 2 minutes between shots and the weather is cool (sub 65F).

Another interesting thing about the Sako 85, and this may well be true of Tikkas, is that it does not copper foul whatsoever. I have shot 50-60 shots between cleaning, and there was no copper in the bore. It took only patches and solvent and oil to clean. I never use any brush directly on any rifle bore, but i do sometimes use and patch wrapped around an undersized brush. For the .338 i use patches wrapped around a .30 or .270 brush (i am not sure which) and i push (push only) that through the bore. I hope that i am not damaging anyhting.

Funny. I have a sako 85 in 338 federal and my tightest group came when I did some rapid fireing.
