7.92 X 33 Kurz, Anyone got any ideas ?
« on: August 15, 2010, 03:34:03 AM »
I just got a sale flyer from Graf & Sons and they have Prvi Partizan 7.92 X 33 primed brass for $ 30.00 for 100 cases.  Its has the same case head as 30-06, 243, ect. and is about 1.3" long and necked to 8 mm.
It wouldnt take much to go up or down in bore size and create a shorty with about the powder capacity of a 45 Colt/ 44 Mag case .   Jedman

That is a pistole round used by the Germans in assulat weapons. It is suposed to push a 125 gn. bullet at 2,100 fps. in it present configeration. If you necked it down to .22 cal. it should have a case capicity about the same as a .223. Personally I would not build a gun for that case. If I could buy a gun chambered on that case for the price of the action I would play with it though.

It's not exactly a pistol round, Catfish.  In point of fact, it's closer to the 7.62x39mm round used by the Soviets in the SKS and AK-47 than anything else.

The 7.92x33mm Kurz actually looks pretty interesting to me by itself.  But if one just has to monkey with it (and someone must, because that's what we do, right?), it could be an interesting platform for taking up to .35 caliber to lob .357" pistol bullets or even .358" rifle bullets, though you may not get the velocity to expand the rifle bullets.  Probably have the same problem going to .338" bullets, too, I'd think.

Now, going down, .30 caliber is an obvious choice.  Plenty of guys out there are using the .30-30 Winchester to push a 125 - 130 grain bullet to just over 2000 FPS and taking deer and the like out of 10" to 14" Contenders.  No reason the 7.92x33 Kurz can't do the same thing.  The German round is actually specced for about 2250 FPS out of a 16.5" barrel.  Give it a 20" barrel to pick up more velocity and you might even get enough velocity out of 150 grain bullets to use them at sub 200 yard ranges.

Taking it down to 6.5mm with a 20" barrel could give you something on the performance of the 6.5 Carcano, only without having to worry about the bolt getting implanted in your forehead, and out of a significantly shorter action (not that the 6.5x52mm required a terribly long action).

Might be an interesting platform to build from to go all the way down to .22 cal and 6mm, even.  The PPC cartridges were built off of the .220 Russian, which itself was based on the 7.62x39.  Could be a wildly accurate BR cartridge.

I think that the 7.92 Kurz is somewhat conservativly loaded at 2250 - 2300 fps w/ 125 gr bullet.
In the picture below the little cartridge in the center is a the first wildcat I dreamed up, Its the top 1.29" of a 303 British formed on 30-30 brass.  I have it in a 20" barreled handi rifle and as in the pic shoots 123 gr. .310 dia bullets at 2240 fps with only a 17.5 gr charge of  H110. Between myself and a friend it has taken 4 deer and a antelope at ranges between 30 and 110 yards in one season, all 1 shot kills.
I would think that the Kurz shooting the same bullet would do 2600 fps at moderate pressure.
With a .357 / .358 bullet it should be somewhere between a 357 Maximum and a 357 Herrett.

Sounds good Jed.

Yep, and you get that without a rim on the case, so that brings into the mix the switch barrel Savage rifle idea.  Using rimless is my kick now.  No extractor grove, means modular.  One stock, trigger, receiver, scope..... and many barrels.  I'm supprised the guys across the big pond in the UK haven't caught on to the Savage switch barrel thing.  That is, seeing as the can only have 3 rifles (so I'm told).  Looks like the new Savage edge would be the perfect platform to do this with.  Light weight, modular, and cheap (267 + tax @ Wally World here in NC).  You could neck it up to .375, use cast bullets, and work the fast burning powders to make a nice subsonic cartridge.  Move over 338 Spectra!  Go Jed go!

...could blow it out straight and then nech with .400 CorBon die. Don't know just how great that would be but if someone were looking for a stronger companion to a .40 or 10mm it might be interesting.

Brian,      Looks like your using a different rimmed case. The longer one could be made on 445 super mag and the other on 44 mag cases.
The Kurz has a base dia. of .470 and is rimless, very similar to a 30-06.      Jed

Jed, yep, I was just thinking of alternatives, especially with cheaper brass of the 44 Mag.

I always thought it would be cool to leave it as-is and re-barrel a Zastava mini mauser 22-250 (Rem 799, charles daly, mark-x etc) to it, sorta 8mm Whisper.
