CNN Poll: Palin, Romney Tied as 2012 Front-runners

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is virtually tied with former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney in the race to be the GOP frontrunner for the 2012 presidential nomination, according to a new CNN poll.
The poll shows Romney only 3 percentage points in front of former Alaska Gov. Palin, within the margin of error, the Boston Herald reported.
“It’s a pretty open contest, and that’s interesting in and of itself,” Suffolk University political professor John C. Berg told the Herald. “It means the primary contest will be tighter.”
Romney has shown strong fundraising and was tapped as the front-runner at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this year.
But Berg said that the close poll figures could signal a tough fight between Republicans during the primary.
“There’s still the desire in both parties to try to get it locked up early . . . so they can focus on attacking the other party - but that’s a ways away,” Berg said.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll of 1,009 adults nationwide was conducted between Aug. 6 and Aug. 10.
