Is much of anything purchased on GunBroker?
« on: August 16, 2010, 02:19:49 PM »
I have been looking at the listings.  There are few bids and the reserve or ‘buy it now’ prices all seem high.  I have made some very good deals on Ebay for reloading gear.  On GunBroker it appears to be mostly new stuff priced higher than Midway.  Is GunBroker a waist of time?  What are your experiences?  Are there good deals to be found there on firearms and shooting gear?

I have to agree their prices are way too high. Don't know if they ever sell anything or not but there are plenty of places to buy the same products cheaper.

I just bought an enfield at a good price and was in excellent condition. I agree, 90% of the reserve prices are off the chart.

I bought a used t/c black diamond for 120 bucks in great shape.  You have to play it like ebay, bid what you want to and if you get it great, if you don't wait till another comes up.

I have sold several things on gunbroker,  at my buddies shop he sells almost as many guns on gunbroker as he does thru the store.  LIke everything else there are good deals and not so good deals on there.  I can usually find something used on gunbroker better than anywhere else.

This seems to be the case.  I have found that the "home" FFL folks seem to have the highest prices.  They buy low and sell high.  Example: 1950's Polish Tok.  Century had them for $200-$250 based on grade.  Gunbroker ad had them "buy it now" $300.  Same gun, even said Century.  I guess folks are just trying to make a buck.

A few years back I financed building a new bike by listing 16 various guns on Gun Broker.  13 sold at what I consider fair prices.  A 14th was cancelled and not re-listed after some pin head won the bid, then wanted me to just mail him the revolver, "just between us".  There are a lot of dealers using it for free advertising though.  Great place to find hard to find or rare stuff.

I've purchased several guns from gunsamerica and tried to do business with gunbroker but because I had a hotmail email account they wanted my credit card number before we even began to do business. I'll put it out there if we have agreed on doing business but not for them to hold in case we might do business. I'll go back to gunsamerica if I've got an itch for something special that I can't find locally.

I've bought and sold a lot of things on GB. If I am looking for something, I filter out the "reserve" auctions. That cuts the choices considerably. Whenever I sell an item, I start the bids at the bare minimum I will accept for it, and let the auction run it's course.
I picked up a box of gun stuff at an estate sale a couple of years ago for $10. After identifying, photographing, and listing all the items, I cleared over $250.
Bargains can be found there, just be patient.

When I first got on GunBroker I found lots of good deals by private sellers. Since then it has been overrun by dealers selling new items for prices that usually don't excite me. It is still a good source for used items or uncommon items that you can't find in every gunstore.

When I'm looking for a used gun I go to GB and see what they are asking that way I know i can buy it locally for $200.00 less, I just use them as a guide line I have never bought any thing off of GB, I have bought a few guns off of other forums.

Like a lot of sellers some on gun broker has not kept in touch with the current recession pricing. That said there are still good deals but you half to hunt for them.
When I use gun broker I'm usually looking for a patulicar gun and just try to find the best price on it I can. If I want it I buy it if I can afford the freight. I'm not buying to resell & that makes a difference.

Yes, I find most things on Gun Broker to be over-priced.  I don't find it a very good idea to buy a gun on line, particularly because I cannot hold it, feel the action, see the finish, etc "in person".  One would think that since the buyer is at such a disadvantage that the prices of used guns would be must LOWER than the typical gun shop.

What I find funny is that once I actually find a good deal on something, people go CrAzY with their bids.  A lot of times people pay WAY more than one can get the same item new from a catalog house or standard gun shop.  I never understood that bid-happy, E-Bay style way of buying things.

As an example; recently I was looking for a cannelure tool.  A new one can be purchased for $63.00 on line.  I found an old used one on E-Bay that started at around $20.00.  Fair price!  When there was about 24 hrs left on the auction, people went crazy and I think it ended up selling for $85.00.  Are people that dumb or are they just crazy?   ???

Everything I buy is usually on gunbroker.com

I try to buy from people not businesses.
