Liquid Smoke............
« on: August 17, 2010, 11:48:23 AM »
Just going over some last minute details before we leave this Friday 8-20.

I've got a couple small bottles to fill up spray bottles and was wondering how many of you bear hunters use this.

Is there such a thing as too much liquid smoke?  I've always assumed there's no such thing as too much and sprayed it all over.

Is it worth risking the noise to spray some in the air once every hour or two once you're in your stand?  I've never done that, but I'm thinking about it.

I keep a bottle up in my tree. A quiet spray once in awhile won't hurt anything. It's the nose you have to worry about. Spray that stuff, and it also helps you keep an eye on the wind. Be careful with it. If you spill it up there you'll have a bear sitting in your stand checking things out. Hopefully while you are gone.

I use 75% imitation vanilla, 25% liquid smoke; both readily available at Gordon Food Service in bulk bottles. Stopped using anise because it is so darned expensive. God Bless and good luck!

A few question's I have, are you going with an outfitter. If so, does he know you want to do that. Introducing a new smell can drive the bear out of a bait site. You may want to check with your outfitter to see if it is something he would want you to do. All I know is, my outfitter would not want you to do that unless you are willing to go home empty handed.

Now if you are on a self guided hunting, and the area is not baited, it may work, and then again it might not. As for spraying once on stand, I don't do anything that shows movement, and I stay a quit as I can. Why risk spooking off a bear?  Some bear will sit back and watch the bait sight for a long time before coming right in, and if you are moving or spraying sent into the air, you just may give yourself away.  JMHO.  ;D

seams silly to me, why would you want to introduce a new smell?

I don't do anything that would mess up my hunt.  If the guide tells me no new smells, I don't do it. If they tell me not to use a thermacell, I don't. A bug suit, and what the outfitter is doing is all that is needed.

The only thing I spray down with is a scent eliminating spray. Like dead down wind or Primos Silver XP scent eliminator.
