Just got to deal with Lyman
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:13:43 AM »
I bought one of their #457191 moulds to use as a light bullet in the 45-70. It casts out at .455". Too small. Sent it back to Lyman along with two bullets it threw. They kept it for 2 months, and sent it back saying the mould is obsolete and there is nothing they could do about it. But they still make that mould. O'well, I can either lap it out a bit or just use it as a heavy bullet in the 45 colt. Oh yeah, it does well in the 45-70 if I size them to .452" and paper patch it back up to .459. At least they sent it back! Kept my bullets though.

I have had mixed experiances with Lyman.  On occasions they have gone way above and beyond what I expected.  On other occasions they have been unwilling to help with the smallest issues.  I can't figure the thinking.

Nobade,

Many years ago I bought the RCBS 300FN for my 45/70(s) it is a double cavity mold of theirs, it casts perfect and to size.

I've always been much happier with the RCBS designs, their molds have always been excellent in all the calibers I've cast for (everything from .224 to .458) and although I've never had to use it myself, their customer service has been touted as courteous and much more responsive.

save yourself the hastle of paper patching the wrong sized bullet and buy the RCBS mold.

Not to mention that the RCBS molds are, to me anyway, built stronger..

I sent one back and they did fix it. But I got the impression they didn't want to do it. And that's not a great way to handle a customer. I wasn't too happy with Midway either since their attitude was, "Just sent it to the factory." I didn't buy it from the factory, so I was annoyed.
