Well dang-it javaman, ya` gotta shoot BOTH!   :D

Patched balls are perfect for plinking, target shooting and small game.  I'm not a fan of the .440 ball for deer, but something like the 240 grain TC Maxi-ball will do just fine for whitetails.

I picked up a 45 cal. Cherokee a while back. Bore's not in the best shape, and I never did get it to shoot balls worth a darn. But with the .454" Lyman Mine' bullet sized to .450 it's a tack driver. Don't know what's up with the TC, but I got other rifles to shoot balls in I guess. I hope yours works better then mine!

My first T/C Hawken developed a pretty pitted bore over the 20 years I owned it.  Towards the end, It wouldn't shoot RB's worth a damn, but would still smoke 'em with maxi balls.  It just filled up the pits with lead, thus smothing the bore....
