Blow Back
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:56:53 AM »
Talk to me about blow back from around the caps on the nipples of a ROA.
The nipples are fine and fit as they are supposed to.
The caps - which are usually Rem or CCI  10 or 11 ;s I forget which at the moment - fit snug without any crimping/squeezing. I have not had any chain fires. This is with 25-30 gr. measured by volume of black or a sub with a lubed wad over the powder and a round ball.
There seems to be a lot of residue on the hammer and the throat thru which the hammer travels.
Blow back is my guess.
Am I doing something wrong or is this just to be expected?- I am a novice if you couldn't tell.

It's normal.  One way to reduce the amount of residue deposited on the frame and hammer is to use a nipple with a smaller flash hole - like Treso nipples.

Just for grins, here is a time lapse photo of what happens when a Remington goes off:

Thanks for the info and pics.
As I said I'm a novice so what are "Treso nipples" and where might one find them?
And will these nipples make a significant difference?

I just got an order from Track of the Wolf yesterday.  I had ordered 6 nipples for my Pietta 1860 Army.  I got the SS type as I have Brass Tresco's on my Uberti 1861 Navy and thought it would be fun to compare the two.   ;)

I can say the German #11 caps fit the SS nipples well, even better then the Trescos, but the Remington and CCI #11's are a little loose.

I'm using factory nipples and #10 caps on my Uberti Dragoon.

From the Possibles Shop website:

TRESO nipples are made from AMPCO, a tough alloy with a tensile strength of 118,000 psi, which is tougher than most steels used in muzzleloading barrels.  This material provides more resistance to repeated blows from the hammer, and the high thermal conductivity of Ampco alloy affects a faster heat dissipation.  This dissipation reduces erosion of the small base hole and assures a longer lasting nipple. All nipples have a small base hole (.028”) to greatly reduce the amount of escaping powder gases.  Many muzzle loading experts feel an added benefit of the small base hole is the hot gases from the percussion cap are more concentrated and uniformly directed against the powder chamber. Ues # 11 caps. Cap & Ball Nipples have a .174" shoulder size.

All of my C&Bs that I use for fun and competition have Treso Nipples on them.  I've found that #10 Remington caps work best on them - regardless of what the description says.
