There are alot of deer on the island. The thing to remember is that by January the've already been hunted for a couple of months already. These deer are like deer everywhere else, when they feel presured they move onto bordering property where they don't get hunted. It's different than hunting upstate. I hunted three days last year and really could'nt get a handle on it. The land for the most part is flat to rolling, with mostly pitch pines and scrub oak. One place in the woods seems to be pretty much the same as anywhere else. I think that unless you spend alot of time preseason scouting your really just reduced to pure luck. As far as the number of hunters, each hunting spot is only for one or two vehicles. You may cross paths with a hunter from a different spot but it's not something to really worry about. The maps for the parks are on the DEC website. You can see the way they have it set up. As far as being worth it, that's pretty much up to you. I don't know if i'd go out of my way for it, but in January there's not much else going on. Any day in the woods is a day well spent. The only other thing I can think of is that your odds are probrably better earlier in the season rather than than later.
