Remake of "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges
« on: August 19, 2010, 07:00:22 AM »
Since this forum gets into western movies, I thought I'd ask what you think about a remake of the classic John Wayne movie,"True Grit"
My opinion is that it is a really big risk to try to remake a classic like this that stared a western movie icon like John Wayne. When I saw this article I immediately thought of the fiasco,(imo), when they remade "Montie Walsh" with Tom Selleck. I'm a fan of Selleck's western movies but his remake of the classic taking the place of Lee Marvin was a flop in the eyes of many. Not because of Selleck so much, but just because it's really hard to improve on perfection. I also have nothing against Jeff Bridges, but he is no John Wayne. Those are some really big boots to fill. Seems like they are taking a big risk remaking any of Wayne's movies. With the sentiment that most people have toward Wayne, I would think this movie will have a hard time getting any traction right from the start......Or is it just me!
Your thoughts on this movie and the remake of "Montie Walsh" if you want to comment?

I never thought of John Wayne as an actor.  Actors can play many roles.  John Wayne only played one...John Wayne.  He was simplly himself in every role he played.

The original was released in 69, and I think the Hollywood studio heads that make these decisions figure that it's going to be a whole new audience viewing the remake, so they're not going to be worried about this younger audiences sentiments about "The Duke" being replaced; I'd guess that many of them don't even have a good idea of who John Wayne was.

It's the Coen brothers that are responsible for this remake, so you might as well assume that it's going to be a quirky oddball version of the Wayne classic.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

I've visited the set of the original in Ridgeway Co. I even drove out to thefarm house, kinda a shame that it is falling apart. What a great movie.

If I'm not mistaken that used to be Wayne's property. I have soaked in the hot springs near there a couple of times years ago.
He owned a bunch of land in that area. That is what people used to say......Beautiful place!!.......Real nice hot springs too. Not over developed at that time.

Ya, I think they may have been back then too. When I was there, there was nobody else around except a few friends. It was nice because it is secluded and a kinda of primative campground. The hot spring ran down from way up hill somewhere and along the way someone had dug holes in the creek and lined them with stone blocks so they formed pools that would hold 4 to 6 people, maybe. There were three of them in the hot stream running down the mountainside. The hot stream ran through the camping area where it leveled out. It was a long time ago but it was nice back then, about 38yrs ago.

I actually saw a preview and it doesn't look half-bad. I'll give it a chance and see.

I personally cant wait for this movie. I have seen a couple different trailers and it looks good. While the original had lots of different styles of gun in it I think this one will still be visually better since today there is more of a want to have authentic clothing, guns and other things. I love John Wayne movies and have tons of them on my rack. I love Western Movies though and there are not enough good ones being made. I think this one will be well done. Maybe a little darker than the first due to the age we live in now as opposed to the 60s-70s.

Here is a nice trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj-nt_v2xFI

And here is an even better trailer

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810153253/video/22265614

I know a lot of John Wayne fans hate that someone is remaking a John Wayne great....but I say, if you like Western movies then try to go see this one at the theater. Even if after you dont like it. Show up and support them that way other movie makers see that there is still a large market for this type of movie.

You can bet I'll line up to get my ticket as soon as it comes to a theater near me.  My oldest son and I were discussing it this evening, and he's anxious to see it too.  From the trailers, (and don't stone me for a heretic) Jeff Bridges may just be better in this role than The Duke was.  I always thought John Wayne's best movies were "The Searchers" and "The Shootist".
Thanks for the stump

Well, the thing I like about JW is that he was pretty much the same guy off screen as on.  He was a staunch patriot, and if it weren't for his 4f status, would likely have served.  For me, it is hard to watch the likes of Sean Penn, Leo Decrapio, and other such traitors.  Jeff Bridges is, however, a pretty good actor.

I have only one complaint with the original "True Grit" and that was Glenn Campbell! what a putz!  John Wayne and Robert Duvall were excellent!

I just hope Mr. Bridges doesn't have the same disgusting sex scenes he acted out in "Wild Bill Hickok."

No offense to Jeff  B... but you can't improve on perfection , Hollywood needs to leave well enough alone.
Stop trying to recycle classics and come up with some new ideas. Jeff B in a western would be great to watch , but an original not a remake.. JMHO

Well, saw the first official ad for the movie during the Cowboys' game today. Didn't look as good as the preview on the internet. Who knows? I'll go see it just to support the Western movie genre. But with all the thousands of really good western stories out there...why mess with a classic???

I don't even like watching the commercials on TV for it. I don't give hollywood one dime of my money anyway. Theaters are way over priced and I don't go anyway. Besides, Matt Damon as a cowboy?.....Give me a break! He is one of the last people whose living I would want to contribute to.
Don't mean to sound grumpy, but it doesn't look like what I would consider entertainment.

It was no where good as the original. Watched it last night, charicters seemed flat. Ned pepper was the only believable charicter in the movie. It was a bit quirky.

Jeff Bridges ain't no John Wayne. I just can't see him filling Wayne's boots in this classic old western. If it ever comes on TV I might see if it's worth watching tho I'd be going into it prejudiced against it. I will not pay money to see it.

Hi Guys,

Since I'm a newby here, I want to say first and foremost that I have alot of respect for each of the opinions posted so far.  I also want to be as polite and respectful as I can while trying to make the following points.

The wife and I went to see the movie this afternoon and I must say that although it will never be as good as the original True Grit with John Wayne, it is a pretty darn good movie.

I am as much of a fan of John Wayne as many of you are, but I also know that many movies made since the Passing of the Duke have also been very good movies.

No one can take the place of John Wayne in the many timeless classic westerns he made thru the years.  However, we must give credit to those who do make good movies today.  We've all seen them.  We know what the titles are.  We know who the actors are.  We all want for the good old days when the Duke and some of our other western movie heros would turn out another one.  They are no longer with us now, so we have to make do with the actors and movies we have available to us today.

With all that said, I must also add that this new True Grit is a totally different movie in and of it self.  It runs much more closer to the actual story line in the original book than the first True Grit did.  It's not supposed to be a replacement for the Dukes version, it's a totally different version of its own.  The actors are different.  The lines are similar and in some scenes exactly the same....just like in the book.

There are other differences too.  I won't bore you with all of them, I'll just say if you do eventually see this new version, please try to keep an open mind about it and try to simply enjoy the fact that someone still thinks great stories need to be told to great guys like us in the form of a western movie.

Respectfully Submitted!!

New Guy On the Block....and now a member of the club.

Thanks for your time and I hope you all have a great holiday season!!

It was a pretty good movie. Worth the price of a ticket. Maybe it'll spur hollyweird to make a few more westerns. I'm a HUGE Duke fan and I will watch it again when it comes to cable. And yes, I also noticed Bridges wore his patch on the other eye!

And with the way he wore on his right eye, it would have been very tough for him to fire his rifle right handed as he did.
