Ruger SR9 ejection issues?
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:15:08 PM »
Hello all,

I purchase a brand new Ruger SR9 two days ago and I just fired my first box of ammo through it tonight.
I made the purchase after researching and reading almost exclusively positive reviews of the firearm but... after firing it for the first time I am far less than impressed. I only fired one box of 50 rounds through the firearm. Well over half of these rounds failed to eject properly with the majority of the cases stove-piping in the chamber. I also had at least three rounds that failed to seat properly. It was rare that I ever had three shots off cleanly without an issue. The guys at the range where I purchased it are telling me that it needs a "break-in" period... Is this true? I have never heard of that before but I am hoping that it is true. They said to put at least 200 rounds through it before calling Ruger. Can you guys tell me if that sounds correct?

I was shooting PMC Bronze, I know it isn't the best ammo but I would not expect these kinds of issues. I am not a new shooter but I do mostly own revolvers. Could I be doing something wrong? I am going to take it back out with different ammo, remington or winchester next time.

Besides the ejection issues the gun seemed to be accurate and I do like it. I would love it if these issues went away!

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thank you!

With a brand new gun and unbroken in recoil spring, the ammo miay well be part of the problem.  You might consider buying some better ammo and a couple different kinds probably.  It took me about 100 rounds to get my New Model Blackhawk to really start dialing in.  After more than 300, I can shoot clay pigeons at 30 yards consistently.  I am hoping to get about 200 more through it before settling in on a load/bullet for deer season.  There are ways to reduce the recoil spring also, ie. Wolff company.  I have their +power springs on hand to put in two of my Handi Rifles.  ;)

I've put a couple hundred rounds through my SR9 with no problems.  Are you holding it with a good firm grip?  I sold a P95 to a buddy ,that I had for 10 years with never a jam.  He called me and told me that it was jamming every third shot or so.  He was new to shooting handguns.  Turns out he was holding it kinda limp wrist, once he held on tighter he had no more problems.  It's not something that you would notice w/ a revolver.  Hope this helps.

Malloc ,

I'm far from an expert....but in my experience,  The semi's that I've owned have mostly all required some "break In ".  Both my MKIII and my 345 had issues for the first few magizines.  After probably less than a hundred rounds my p-345 will shoot anything, and not miss a beat.  The MKIII will still stove-pipe once in a great while....believe it to be more of a ammo issue than the gun.  I had a Springer 45 that would not shoot a full magizine with out stovepiping (after several hundred rounds )I called and shipped it back to them, when it came back.......it never malfunctioned again.  As bad as your problem seems to be...I would tend to think something is amuck.  But as others have advised...try other ammo and give it several hundred rounds.  Then call Ruger , they may not have a "written" warrenty, but they will stand behind their weapons.

good luck
regards irold

In most semi-auto's, a stovepipe is usually a soft hold (limp wrist) or underpowered ammo.  You could also speed up the break-in of the recoil spring by leaving the slide locked back when not in use for a couple of weeks.  Try some other ammo and make sure you grip the gun tightly and let us know how it goes.  44 Man

Bought my 3 kids their own new SR9's for Christmas......shot them as soon as we could not a single issue.  Two of mine are gals, and they seemed to like the way they shoot, and are participating in conceal carry classes this spring.  They asked me when are they getting their Ruger baseball style caps      ha ha
