Gun Advertising
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:08:42 AM »
Back before Al Gore invented the Internet, and so many new firearms magazines hit the news stands, a lot of shooters depended on the manufacturers advertising in the established gun and hunting rags to get the word out on their products.  I thought it would be interesting to talk about what gun advertisements really made an impression on you.

For me, there were a couple.  I'll never forget that old Savage ad with the Indian, complete with war paint and feathers holding his Savage rifle.  Probably be politically incorrect these days..  Or the one with Tom Frye holding his Remington .22 Nylon rifle, sitting on a 10 foot high pile of wood blocks, each with a neat hole drilled thru it, all shot while tossed in the air.

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

the annual book of the 1911 has almost nothing BUT drool worthy photos

cowboy action shooting looks good, makes me want to go and buy a .44russian break top and 30-30 lever gun everytime, even though I feel those two platforms are not that great.

One of my favorites was a hunter carrying a krag rifle, probably 3040 krag, with a snarling grizzly bear facing him. Lot of good ads. Not allowed today, too violent, not pc, might cause the pantywetters to have nightmares. Sad. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I remember seeing the picture from 1907 of Ad Topperwein who did the same feat only with WINCHESTER rifles.
He used three model 03 22 semi-autos and shot 70 some thousand with about 13 missed IIRC.

I think it was the XP 100 Remington pistol in 221 Fireball. It was advertised in the back of Field & Stream in a little block classafied add. It looked like something from outer space. I have never seen one for real, just pictures. That was close to 50 years ago. eddie
