What would tear up a yellow jacket nest?
« on: August 21, 2010, 06:38:17 AM »
The other day I found a yellow jacket nest in the ground behind my archery target. The next day I went back to spray it and the ground was all torn up and no more yellow jackets.

I live in Northern Ohio and was trying to figure out what critters would tear into a nasty yellow jacket nest.

My first thought was a skunk. There have been several bear sightings in the area this summer and thats the only other critter I could figure.

Any other ideas?

Coyotes and raccoons take care of the nests out here on our place.

Around here could be an armadillo or skunk.

The critters will tear up a nest in no time and the bees can't hurt'em.

Actually Willaim TM is correct. I leave them alone around my place unless there in a area where they could be accidentally disturbed, and someone stung. Yellow Jackets, Wasps, and I believe even Dirt Dobbers, prey on all spiders, and in Texas, that is a good thing with the Brown Recluse and other spiders.
As far as their nests, I believe it is made of wood fibers and and the females' spit.

I've got no time for yellow jackets around here.  When I find them, I destroy them.

When I lived in tnn. we had then in our yard in the ground the armadillos would dig them up and the ones in the bushes about 3to4 feet above ground the skunks would get at night.

I'd vote it was the black bears. They love those nests. I used to caddy at a golf course on the edge of Anchorage Ak. Invariably, this time of year when they had a tournament, some bear would work in the deep rough along the course digging up nests. Woe to a golfer who dropped a ball in there. The course one August even posted a sign warning folks not to use perfume or cologne as it seemed to attract more yellow jackets that were already stirred up by the bears.
