Darned if you do, darned if you don't
« on: August 22, 2010, 07:52:21 AM »
As most know I was diagnosed back in December with cancer in the left lung.  I began treatment, after 47 radiation treatments and 12 weeks of Chemo they determined there is a 98% chance the cancer is in remission.  I had my last Chemo about six weeks ago, was feeling great, and doing pretty much as I had always had.  On July 24 My Son and I went to a gun show, spent 5-6 hours walking around looking and visiting with friends.  Following the show we came back to my house, had a big slice of ice cold watermelon and visited for a while.  After he left I got very sick, at first I thought it was the cold melon, but I was also having much difficulty breathing.  I have oxygen so I hooked up to the tank and held on.  After a week I continued to get worst, the following Friday my wife insisted I call the doctor, he seen me and admitted me to the hospital.  I stayed six days, the test revealed my blood-oxygen ration had dropped to a “danger level” (below 70) as a result of damage the radiation treatments had done to my good lung.  which now has almost as much scar tissue as on the cancerous one.  I am home, on medication with oxygen 24-7 but the lung doctor seems to think things will improve to the point I won’t need the oxygen after 6-8 weeks.

I just learned that this is often a problem with the type of radiation treatments I was getting, sometime the cure does as much damage as the cancer…………

I'll send a prayer for a swift recovery.  My daughter had a rare thyroid cancer and had to have I-131 treatments, I-123 treatments, and many, many radioactive scans.  My X and I were concerned about her reproductive health and asked the Dr. if there was a chance the therapies would prevent her from having kids.  His blunt response (we've asked for nothing else) was "Not as much as the cancer."    Stay strong.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.

Cancer is a horrible thing. Hang in there, I wish you a speedy recovery.
