Tim,

These loads you posted were for the 460 s&w and not the 45 long colt,correct?..........If they are for the long colt where are you getting the load data from?

I just loaded 23 gr. h-110 with 300gr hard cast lead bullet and am getting 1550fps,ten feet from the muzzle out of the little buff...even  the load data on the Hornady web sight for a 45lc FTX bullet max load out of a 20" Rossi lever is 1150fps...

That sounds like a great hunting load and I hope it is for the LC

That's TC/Ruger Colt data right out of Hodgdon's manual for the 250gr XTP with Lil'gun, I've shot 2 different bullets using it, the 250gr Speer GDHP and the 250gr Hornady SST muzzleloader bullet, both chrono'd ~1925fps from my CR-45 BC Carbine, I did go 1gr over their data, but I also loaded to a longer COL to get closer to the lands.

I just cant find anything even close to those velocitys in 45 long colt,on the Hodgdon website,.....the hottest Ruger,Freedom Arms,Thompson Center, load they list is a 250GR. XTP- 26.5 GR. H-110 powder running at 1455fps.

What edition is your manual? I am not trying to be obnoxious, I just want to know how I can get that kind of velocity out of a 45 long colt, and not blow my head off? I just cant find anything in any of my manuals that is close to that...Thanks

That was the one thing Hodgdon didnt give was the barrel length, but even at 50fps per inch, it never added up on any of my other manuals......1680fps was the most I could come up with a Contender load out of the Nosler manual,it had a 12" barrel at 1281fps and I added 50fps per inch of barrel..... = 1681 fps

I will have to do some experimenting it looks like.......

Good article on Colt loading and with Reloader7 it states over 2200fps from a browning lever gun which gains some barrel length, but that's smokin' for this big ole bullet.  See bottom of article:

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/45coltlevergun.htm

Quote
There is a whole world of surprises waiting the reloader using the rifle powder ReL#7 in the 45 long Colt case for rifles. (Rifle powder not #7 pistol powder) With the 260 Keith I start with 25 grains and work up. I want anybody that wants to try it...to work up slowly so I’m not giving the top load..but the top velocity from the Winchester is 1800 to top end 2000 fps. And in the Browning 1892 action it will reach nearly 2200 fps or more and a SK of 82. Go slow with mag/pistol primers, and ReL#7 and because of it’s slow burn rate, it gives great velocities. H4227 is the other really good powder, but obviously not as slow as ReL#7.

Hodgdon data is from a 7¼" barrel, if you pick up a Hodgdon Annual for $8-$9, you'll have all the info needed for their loads.

Thanks tacklebury, thats exactly what I was looking for,but I doubt you will find those loads in anybodys manual,so my H110 load is right in the ballpark at 1550.....Who needs a 45/70 :-\

Yah, I've done the H-110 route, but it kicks a LOT more than the RL7 load and the RL7 gets better velocity or sensed recoil anyway.  8)

I have 8# of H-110 though, that I have to use up,never have used RL-7 before but I have read that it works well in the 30 rooskie also,

SO YOU THINK THE MUZZLE BLAST IS LESS WITH RL-7 THAN H110? CAN HARDLY HEAR YA.....

To throw another load in there, I use the 250 XTP with 25.5 gr of Lil'Gun and get 1880 fps from my 45LC carbine. Pretty accurate until the barrel gets nice hot.  ;)

I have two 45-70 BCs and just bought another barrel which I haven't decide what to do with yet, maybe 45-90, one of the BCs has been a 45-120 since 2005, the other is scoped with a Bushnell 10x40, this is what it can do at 100yds when you leave the old eyes out of the equation. The second is a 200yd target from the 45-120 using the Williams FP-TK sight and the 525gr BTB Piledriver at 1700fps, I made a sight adjustment after the first shot at 11 O'clock.

Complete pic posting help can be found in the FAQs and in all classified forums, you don't need to host pics elsewhere if they're small enough to attach, the GBO owned and administered(by me) MHP is free. The biggest problem most members have in posting pics is they don't know how to reduce the size of the pics their camera takes, then they must be resized, the link below has a link to a free photo resizer if you can't figured out how to change the size of pics your camera takes, 640x480 works great for attaching pics and posting on forums.

Right on Tim.  8)  Another really nice free photo editor I've been using since it's inception in like 1996 or so is Xnview.  Does one of the best jobs of resizing without pixelating.  8)  Just another option anyway.  8)  It is possible to use a site like:

http://imageshack.us/

Which I use with some other sites that don't offer hosting as graciously as Greybeards does.  8)

Has anyone tried the Hornady factory .45LC 225gr FTX loads? I did today and the cases were heavily sooted. Box says velocity is only 960fps. :( Guess I will load my own, powerful loads.
