Things are never quite what they seem, like Iraq for example: There are two major camps - there were WMDs, there weren't any WMDs, and they hoot, thump chests and fling poo at each other. And while that goes on, the truth, which looks different than either camp expected, carries on. As for trackable signatures, the ability of doing something and the doing of something are two completely different things. Things are never quite as simple as we'd like them to be I suppose. Nation building is never a good idea.

I'm in the 3rd camp  - it was not about spreading democracy, removing an evil dictator, WMD, terrorists ... stamping out Kurd genocide or any thing else. These are mere by-products or excuses or whatever else we want to categorize them as.

It was all about protecting our interests...OIL.  If Oil was not involved we would never have gone.  Right , wrong or indifferent this is my own personal conclusion I have come to believe.

Now its time for turn on the taps.. pay for the regime change, and offset the cost of the war the U.S tax payers are having to pick up, and at least make the deaths of so many young people have some sort of meaning. Early on we were told the Oil would pay the cost of the war.

I will also go out on a limb  -  within a Hundred years  Iraq will convert  to a theocratic gov't. or oligarchy or another dictatorship of sorts. But it wont be a democracy. For some reason some peoples just feel the need to be ruled it;s the only way some societies know how to function.

We fought the war for EXXON , SHELL, BP and the like. No one will ever convince me otherwise.
The Oil corps used their lobbyist leverage on congressional leaders, Admin and cabinet insiders , Rummy ,
Cheney, and the like ,  provided any plausible reason and played little Bush like a pawn and steered him to
thinking he needed to finish what Big daddy had started.

But in the end it was all about the Oil. No more no less , and Haliberton has done quite well to boot.
Another positive by-product.. what a Joke

TM7
I beg to differ Saddam along with six others of his inner circle were indeed charged with genocide for the gas attack on
on the Kurdish people. He was charged on April 4th 2006.

The other 6 were

Ali Hassan Majid, IE: - Chemical Ali
Sultan Hashim Ahmad, - defense minister
Saber Abdul Aziz al-Douri, - intelligence chief
Hussein al-Tirkiti, Republican - Guard commander
Taher Tafwiq al-Ani, - provincial governor
Farhan Mutlaq al-Jubouri. - A top military commander

Additionally,
A Dutch court sentenced a chemicals merchant, Frans van Anraat, to 15 years in prison for selling Saddam’s regime the chemicals used in the gas attacks.

one additional comment:
The Halabja deaths were captured on camera by the Iranian photographer Kaveh Golestan, who was subsequently awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

In 100 years, none of the OPEC countries, Arab states, etc. will have oil revenue to remain a player on the world stage. We won't mind if they settle back into a tribal state, and revert to their cultural heritage. No sense trying to stop it, probably smarter to figure out a way to accelerate the decline so we can stop worrying about it.

TM7, I don't know about a global peak oil theory, but I know the arab peninsula has less than 30 years in most places, maybe less than 20. Its a highly published concern in every AP nation except for Saudi, and then it is discussed carefully so as not to offend the Wahab.
