WARNING: Congress Lame Duck Session Planned for November 15
The United States Senate website defines "lame duck" session as "When Congress (or either chamber) reconvenes in an even-numbered year following the November general elections to consider various items of business. Some lawmakers who return for this session will not be in the next Congress. Hence, they are informally called 'lame duck' members participating in a 'lame duck' session."
If you're a student of history, you may recall that these lame duck sessions have been used to pass rather nefarious legislation, including the approval for U.S. participation in the World Trade Organization. The sessions have been described as "rare and useless," kind of like common sense in Congress. Unfortunately, a lame duck session has been scheduled for November 15 of this year.
What can we expect? Probably a push to get through legislation that the Democratically controlled Congress hasn't been able to pass so far, including legislation on climate change, cap and trade, and card check. And let's not forget about ratification of such unpopular treaties as the Law of the Sea Treaty and other United Nations sovereignty robbing treaties.
So what can be done? Visit with your Representative and Senators now and ask them to pledge that they will not engage in such activities that are designed to circumvent the "normal" process of debating the merits of legislation by passing legislation through a lame-duck Congress with many members that have been recently defeated in a general election. Anything less is dishonorable and as former Senator Trent Lott said in the above New York Times article that we linked to, "They are always a mess, accomplish little or nothing and wind up being an embarrassment to everybody."
