Need help for 45-70 BC bullet molds
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:07:07 PM »
I have the Buffalo Classic, 32" barrel, 1:20 twist.    I just started loading my own for small silhouettes out to 150 yds. (405)   We (club) now want to try for score type targets out to 300 yds.   I have been told to use flat nose; round nose or semi pointed bullets.  385 molds to 500.   "What would be a better bullet at 300 yds for score"?   All of them mean well, but they all have different rifles, 45-90, 44-40, 30-30 and one has a 50-120 or something like that.   Thanks for your help     beng

IMO for distances that far you need a 405 up to a 500 gr. mold.  I use the Lee 405 gr. hollow base for all my low velocity.  I shoot just for giggles sometimes in a friend's pasture where I can get 800 yds, at a steel plate.  I can hit it more consistently with the heavier bullets.  I also have a Lyman mold that throws a 330 gr. hollow point, but I'm not crazy about the bullets or their application for my BC.

I've heard good things about this bullet from other members:

It's an available mold and you could order 50 and test them and if you like, buy the mold.  ;)

The B/C on that bullet is really good. It's a gascheck design, just in case you care. The diameter of .458 might be OK in your rifle, but I use the .459 Lee 405 hollow base in mine. It is proper diameter for the Classic and carries enough lube for the long bore.
Like tacklebury said, you might want to try a box and see what the results are.

Lee 459-405-HB

P.S. The Lee bullet drops from my mold at .459+
I don't have to size them.

That's good to know Joe.  8)  I'd been looking at that one.  Do you have any depth seating issues with it or have you reamed your throat on your .45-70?

I have throated my rifles, but it works just fine in my unthroated Shikari. I seat it to the top band just behind the nose area.

Lee 459-405-HB
I have a new Buffalo Classic that I have started using this bullet.  It casts easily and will hold a lot of lube.  I'm shooting smokeless and found fully lubed with Lee's 50/50 I would only get about two accurate shots, it seemed the lube was fouling the barrel, but lubed with Rooster Liquid lube it would keep on shooting.  I do not size the bullets from the mold which drops at .460.  I have not done anything to the throat of the rifle.

Just by dumb luck I got the Lee 405 mold.
In my BC it shoots extremely well.
I've got heavier and lighter, but the 405 shoots dead on.

I took my BC to the range today.  Using this bullet with 13.5 gr of Unique, my group was hand sized on the metal target at 200 yards.  I then ran some BP rounds, with the bullets well lubed with 55 grains of Cowboy GOEX BP.   It shot to the same point of aim and was a little tighter.  This is good shooting for me, I was using a Marble tang sight.

I use a Lee 450 grain RNFP mold. Seems to be good for me. I never do much shooting at paper for patterns, but usually can hit what I want to.
