Recoil Issues
« on: August 24, 2010, 11:41:51 AM »
As many of you know I have a very bad shoulder. I have had a heck of a time finding a rifle I could shoot and use for hunting.  I think I have figured it out. After Quick's work with the 6x45 I was going to try that ,but when I was researching the load data I realized I could maybe use a standard 243. Then a 243 barrel showed up on the classified and I bought it. It fit the frame I wanted, thanks woodchucker. Here is what it looks like after some mods.

An explanation of the mods. ATI stock  I like the pistol grip it soaks us a lot of recoil, Limbsaver recoil pad, 13 oz C&H Recoil reducer and a MkIV /A1  ,carved broom stick, to keep the stock from collasping.
It weighs 8 lbs 4 oz as she sets, with the mods it recoils at a level I can stand,ie;6.8 fpe recoil to the shoulder.

That's interesting.  How did you get the float tube to hang on the forend?

Cool rig and I second the question on the forearm!  I don't want to do it to my BC's, but might later on a different frame.  I really think that'd be a nice backpacking gun with the collapsible stock.  8)

It goes on with the regular forend scres. This barrel is free floated from the forend screw forward.I used Larry's (trotterlg) set screw stop. The application is in the FAQ's.     Doug

What brand or location did you get the forearm or is it a std. AR-15 style?  Thanks for the response.  8)

Tim, I had it out three days ago.13 rounds of Federal 100gr,I shot it across the hood of my truck.I find that position to be the worst for me,as far as recoil goes.No major pain   ;D     I am working up a load of a 85gr Speer BTSP  and a 80 gr FMJ Hornady. These should work for what I want.   Doug

Doug,
It's great to hear that you were able to get it set up so it would work for you. I have a friend who swears by his .243 for deer and hogs using Sierra 85gr. bullets. Here's his formula: 85gr Sierra #1530, OAL 2.66, 43gr AA4350, .38" three shot 100 yard group
