Hornady ammo in 35 Whelen
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:50:08 PM »
My wife found some 35 Whelen in Hornady Light Mag today and got me a box.On the back of the box it says "For Fixed Breech Rifles Only".Do any of yall shoot this out of the Handi? It says 2850 at the muzzle.Im looking forward to it.Any concerns with a new Handi and this ammo?

Yup, lots of members have used it, that's just a CYA lawyer thing.  ;)

Should be fine Hornady  uses a blend of powder to reach the higher velocity, while keeping pressures the same as thier normal ammo..thats why you pay more for it.

It's still loaded to SAAMI specs, and just an FYI, their proprietary powders are going to be available for us handloaders in January!  ;D

It was actually only $30.99 a box.If it shoots good,I will probably go and get another box or 2.The guy at the shop told her this would be a normal stock item in the Whelen.

FWIW, Double Tap rates their 200gr TSX ammo at 2850fps too.

I would imagine that this should be more than adequate for our 150 lb Mississippi whitetails. That little gun packs a wallop off of the bench.I should finish the sighting in on Saturday, weather permitting.
