Options again..
« on: August 24, 2010, 05:58:27 PM »
Want a 30-30 Handi. About $280 incl tax local, new off the shelf.  Also the 'used' 243 available again, youth stock, 22" bull barrel, #NP receiver, says unfired, for $195.

Both with wood stocks.

Can't get both now.  I'd need a new stock for the 243.

Anything I 'really' need to know about the 243 to stop me from getting it even if it's not 'exactly' what I want?

This will finally be my first Handi rifle.

Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

The only thing I've heard is that some of the ultra light 243's are super sensitive to heat and people have some issues getting those to group.  I haven't heard of an issue with the stock or heavy barrel versions.  8)  You can get the 30-30 or 243 at davidson's and get a free replacement warranty also.  My cost is $285 to my dealer with local tax.

Note that you should re-run the search if you aren't in Michigan, so you will get the dealers near you and your tax.

Also, from what I've read and heard from other members, the 30-30 is out of the box typically one of the most accurate of all the Handi-rifle calibers.

Bud's has the 30-30 for $255 with free shipping, hard to beat that deal.  ;) I wouldn't be concerned about the 243, I have 4 of them, two Superlights and two 24" bull barreled Ultras, they all shoot good, but the bull barrel will work great for what ever you use it for.

The .243 is a good lil' gun. I just bought a youth model for my father-in-law. He wants to take the grand kids hunting at his place in Arkansas so he's been making some light loads with the Sierra 100 gr. Pro-Hunter spitzers. They group pretty good so far with 1.5" to 2" five shot groups @ 100 yards. He's only shooting with one sand bag under the for end and the butt end shoulder'd.

Well... I got the whole 243, a new breech, a bronze spacer and the 30-30 AI bbl is on the way.  Now all I need is wood.

It happened all at once, in 4 days... but I rose to the occasion.  Beginning to wonder though, if putting these things together is more fun than actually shooting them.  Well see.

Bell well...
