Sorry but I do not have my caliper gauge with me here - all my reloading stuff is up at our place in the woods.  Remember that these are thicker 454 cases, not 45LC.  According to specs - when sized they should be 0.478 all the way from head to mouth.  If I can dig up something around here to measure with, I will let you know what the swollen diamter is because I do have one of the cases here.

I can't find my set of telescope gauges so I could mike the bore on my unshot colt but using a dial caliper mine measures.482 at the end. Time will tell.

Mine mic's at .485 from the end of the chamber,so hopefully that measurement will tell you,because that is what my case measures after its been fired,,if thats the deal you should be good..........

After reading this I had to check mine, measured at the end of the chamber it mic'ed at .484" not realy shure if this is good or bad?

I think they're all pretty much the same, but as the reamer(s) wear and are sharpened, they'll cut a tighter chamber, so those made latest should have chambers that are tighter. From the specs on the chamber dimensions on Leverguns, we're well under the .4862" listed.

Rugers, like Colts, are plagued with oversize chambers that have come from the black powder era and poor tolerance standards in modern industry. By taking a new Ruger in say a 44 magnum caliber, we rechamber it using our custom reamers to tight 45 Colt specs. Standard SAMMI specs for .45 Colt is .484 minimum to .489 maximum diameter. Our reamers cut a .480 chamber. Average 45 Colt case dimensions are .476 diameter.

Thanks for all the research Tim, sure puts my worries to rest,.....just came in from shooting the little carbine my light load for my Bisley is shooting one inch groups at 40 yards with factory sights,an clocks at 1133fps out of the Little Buff .....that will be my walking around load because it shoots just as good out of my Bisley.......

I know people will laugh at me but has anyone put a sling on one of these little guys....sling is nice when you need two hands for other things.

I've always enjoyed Paco's articles, however I think I'll keep the 45/70 loads for the 45/70. With so many new rifles to play with this year and so little time to do it, I've really fallen behind in load development. I'm still playing with some deer loads for the .45 Colt and the .357 Max. and plan to take both to the range in the morning along with an M4 I just finished building.
Of course after reading these posts you know I'll be measuring the fired .45 Colt cases!

Right on Don, the 45-70 will do that job at much lower pressure with less wear and tear on the rifle, will shoot much larger bullets if ya want ta boot.

Don, just don't discount at least one thing from the Paco Kelly article.  I've been having great luck with loads developed with Reloader7 from longer barreled guns and I got that from his article.  It is a lot easier on the shoulder and the action than any H-110 loads I've tried, or even the higher end Ruger loads with Unique. 

There is a whole world of surprises waiting the reloader using the rifle powder ReL#7 in the 45 long Colt case for rifles. (Rifle powder not #7 pistol powder) With the 260 Keith I start with 25 grains and work up. I want anybody that wants to try it...to work up slowly so I’m not giving the top load..but the top velocity from the Winchester is 1800 to top end 2000 fps. And in the Browning 1892 action it will reach nearly 2200 fps or more and a SK of 82. Go slow with mag/pistol primers, and ReL#7 and because of it’s slow burn rate, it gives great velocities. H4227 is the other really good powder, but obviously not as slow as ReL#7.

I had never thought to try it before, but I will have to give RL-7 a try with some heavier cast bullets in the .45 Colt. It's already my favorite powder for 460gr. cast 45/70 loads and that's from a 16.5" barreled rifle.

Like other people, all this talk made me check my new rifle's chamber.  Best I can tell with calipers it's right at .484.  I think I'll check some fired cases from my SAA's and M73...    Just outa curiousity don't cha know...

Bring lots of ammo with you when you do finally get to shoot it, I think you will be pleased, the one I have mic's .485 from the chamber and it's been shootin 3/4 - 1-1/2  3 shot groups, not even off bags just bracing off of a post. get out there and break that baby in...
