Light bullets in 450 Marlin
« on: August 25, 2010, 06:39:24 AM »
Veral do you have any thoughts on using light bullets in a Marlin levergun in 450 Marlin?  I'm thinking of something on the order of a 275 gr WFN.

Would this profile feed OK?

Do you normally like a lead impact slug when you make a mould for the Marlin, or are the throat dimensions consistent enought so that you could make a bullet that fits well, but could also be used in other 45 caliber rifles?

As a general rule, with most levergun cartridges I like to fill the chamber to a close fit.  i.e. Make the bullet large enough so the loaded case fits close, so the bullet is held most concentric to the bore on takeoff.  The WFN would be best accuracy wise in that light a bullet, and most customers who use it in 45-70's report smooth feeding if they seat the bullets real deep.  Experimentation will proove the right seating depth.  Crimp with a Lee factory crimp die, where ever it feeds best, and do the same in any other 45 rifle.  .460 diameter is right for all but a very few Marlins, and other 45 rifles, though a few of the big cartridge chamberings will do better with more diameter.
