357/20ga combo gun
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:34:36 AM »
i have a "snowbird house" in Apache Junction, AZ and before too long it'll be time to go over there. I'm there off and on from November to about May 1st, the rest of the year is just too darn hot. Most of my shooting there has been at Usery Mt range about 6 miles from my house, but i plan on finding some dove and quail hunting near me. So i am putting together a combo gun for AZ....357 barrel and 20 ga mod barrel on a sb2 frame with camo lam stocks. The 357 has a 2.5x20mm shotgun scope mounted forward of the hammer. I need to find a gun case(soft) that has a pocket for a extra barrel, haven't found the right one yet. I also need a little mild steel shim material @ .004, about the size of a postage stamp. All i've been able to find is kits from brownell's and hate to buy the whole kit cuz i'll probly never use all the different sizes. IMO the machinist's shim stock works much better than a piece of feeler gauge...when i clamp the feeler ga material in the notch and remove the clamp the feeler ga wants to "spring back" straight while the shim stock retains the curve of the notch and is easier to glue and clamp in. Anybody know where i can buy a small amount of shim stock.?...Mike

I don't know the thickness of it, but there have been quite a few post about using a piece of soda can.

Small world, I also have a little place in Apache Junction and shoot at the same range.  Go to a auto parts store and buy a feeler gauge set, then when you find the right thickness, heat it up to red and let it cool off slow, it will soften it up and make it easier to form into a shim.  Each leaf of the set will make about 5 or 6 shims with some to spare.  Larry

Spikehorn,

The aluminum pop can shims are too soft.  I mashed one out of my 30-06 in about 10 rounds and they were not hot loads.

Zoner,

I bet that combo truck gun would look nice with a Straight Camo Lam Stock. ::)

Anneal the feeler guage twice, and the slow cool off is important. If you have some garden lime around (best), or even clean sand, lightly pack some in a soup can and heat it up in the oven. Poke a hole straight down into it with a table knife. Heat the steel to red hot, quickly stick it in the hot stuff and tamp the material down tight on both sides. Let sit until cool, grab the tip with a plier and try to fold it over. If it breaks rather than bend, repeat the anneal.

I, too, have some .004" brass shim stock. The same offer applies, if needed. :)

BTW, how far is this place from Tucson? I'll be there for a few days in Oct.

Thanks, Dinny
